PHILADELPHIA -- A misunderstanding about an Orthodox Jewish prayer ritual led a US Airways Express captain to divert his Kentucky-bound plane to Philadelphia on Thursday, authorities said.
A 17-year-old boy on Flight 3079 traveling from New York to Louisville was using tefillin, a set of small black boxes attached to leather straps and containing biblical passages, said Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore.

Matthew 1:1 The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the Son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matthew 1:16 and Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband to be of Mary, out of whom Jesus was born, the One called Christ.
Matthew 1:18 And the birth of Jesus Christ was this way (for His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph) before the coming together of them, she was found having babe in womb by the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:21 And she will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.
Matthew 2:1 And when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men arrived from the east to Jerusalem,
Matthew 2:2 saying, Where is He born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.
Matthew 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned Him, saying, Are You the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say it.
Matthew 27:29 And plaiting a crown of thorns, they placed it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And bowing the knee before Him, they mocked at Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews.
Matthew 27:37 And they put up over His head His charge, it having been written: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Mark 15:26 And the inscription of His charge was written over Him, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Luke 23:38 And also an inscription was written over Him, in Greek and Latin and Hebrew letters: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.
John 5:18 Because of this, therefore, the Jews lusted the more to kill Him, for not only did He break the sabbath, but also called God His own Father, making Himself equal to God.
John 8:31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, If you continue in My Word, you are truly My disciples.

Ho hum. Orthodox Judaism is different from Messianic Judaism, after all. See post 1.

He had to do that on the flight? How about a rule where people can pray unobtrusively as much as they want, but rituals, etc. are banned on flights. Is that too drastic?
Yes it is. The inexperienced crew made fools of themselves.

What makes you think that everyone knows all about Jewish practices?
So, is American a "Christian" nation? Shame on "Christians" that don't know something biblical when they see it. Read up a little - it's all in the Bible.

When it comes to prayer, Ill take Jesus direction from the Sermon on the Mount....
You mean Jesus, that "Jew"? Since we know that He and His disciples practiced prayer in precisely the manner of pious Judaism of the day, it shouldn't shock us that He would have worn teffilin at least once a day... and there is a case that could be made that His brother "James" wore them all the time as was the manner of Jerusalem piety.

US Airways pilots
Don't blame US Airways pilots. Those pilots fly to Tel Aviv daily, and are well-aquainted with teffilin. Blame the COMMUTER crew that was crewing an airplane with US Airways markings.

just curious.why do people feel it necessary to do on planes what most would never do in a movie theater?
From an airline employee... that is the most ridiculous thing I have heard today. All flights are not under 2 hours long. I will bet that there are things you do on a long flight that you would never do in a movie theater - at least without a diaper on.

You're here to teach us about Judaism.
Like I told a Jewish man who worked at the Catholic Family Services in New Haven when he tried a similar argument: When Jesus performed the first Mass (Consecration of the bread and wine) he forsook all his past rites. Once he did that all the Jewish rites that he once may have observed no longer applied. That is why we Catholics have our own Mass and the other rites of the Catholic Church.
Your coming here and trying to tell us that we are somehow inferior because we don't know what the little box on someone's head is pure arrogance.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men."
Your assertion is obvious (and absurd). You think "public prayer" is out of bounds... if it looks too Jewish. My guess is that if you attend church that someone prays out loud, and you would have no problem with THAT. Hmmm, maybe you need to learn a little bit about the JEW you call "Jesus." Prayer is a very Jewish thing.

No, arrogance is putting words in Jesus' mouth. That you know nothing of the religion of the Bible (for you, at least 3/4 of your Bible), is a sad statement on your "religion." I find it very odd that no other religion in the world repudiates 3/4 of their holy Scriptures. But, I do understand it. It comes from hateful men like Justin Martyr, or John Chrystostom who could not bear the thought that their Savior was JEWISH.

I have gone over your posts. You have a history of almost exclusively preaching about Judaism, attacking the Christian faith and snide comments about Christians lack of knowledge re the Jewish religion.
Perhaps you should look at your OWN motives before you continue to impugn the rest of us.

In any case sometimes I wish we had a bozo list. You'd definitely be on mine.
Your posting history is one filled with mild insults and snarky comments about what you perceive as a lack of knowledge of others regarding religion. Your home must be a lonely place to feel the need to endlessly denigrate others for their supposed lack of knowledge.

Actually, I try and point out that some "Christians" know very little about the Bible, and the religion of the Bible. Notice, I did not say "all Christians." The irony that someone who claims to be the disciple of a Jew is ignorant of Jewish things is too much. That people who claim the Bible as their holy Scriptures would not know of Bible things is a sad commentary on their misplaced zeal.
