PHILADELPHIA -- A misunderstanding about an Orthodox Jewish prayer ritual led a US Airways Express captain to divert his Kentucky-bound plane to Philadelphia on Thursday, authorities said.
A 17-year-old boy on Flight 3079 traveling from New York to Louisville was using tefillin, a set of small black boxes attached to leather straps and containing biblical passages, said Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore.

Sorry, it was meant entirely tongue-in-cheek.
It's not a "show," it's obedience to the Word of the Almighty.
“kid should have known better, sad but this is what
we have come to. “
Why should he have known better? The last I heard, NO hijacker or suicide bomber has ever prayed “Shama Yisrael,” “Jesus Saves,” or “Hare Krishna.”
“Allahu akbar” should however be a warning that something is going down. I recall buying a Koran after 9/11 to see what was in it, but I did NOT take it out of my carry-on luggage on the airplane. And I am not even a Muslim.
It's really a rare sight as these prayers are to be said upon rising first thing in the morning." <<<<
No, you are mistaken; as has been stated many times on all the threads about this is that the FLIGHT CREW should have known that the 17 year old was an Orthodox Jewish teenager; not only should ALL flight crews be aware of what teffillin look like and what they are, this fact is compounded by the plane was from La Guardia, which is where a HUGE NUMBER of Orthodox Jews regularly fly into and out of, every single day of the year.
just curious.why do people feel it necessary to do on planes what most would never do in a movie theater?
Santeria is generally found in Spanish-speaking countries, and is much more facially Catholic although all the Catholic saints have an African/animist alter ego.
Voudou is much more African in its practice, and there aren't really direct correlations between the loa or godlings and Catholic saints (although some have developed over the years.)
It's really a bit of a stretch to connect phylacteries and voodoo . . . even as a general sort of comparison. I'm just a shikse from the South, and even I know what phylacteries are!
In a movie theater, you can get up and walk out at any time you wish, and you don't have to show up two hours before the movie starts.
I don’t understand - WHY did the pilot decide to “divert the plane anyway” AFTER it was explained to him what the teenager was doing. Doesn’t make sense. What was the diversion for? And, did they REALLY have to do all that searching and questioning. Come on, people, get a grip!
How can you pray the Rosary and count off the beads if the whole show is wrapped 3-4 times around your hands?
Recognizing that these days praying at take-off is a very sane idea, why don’t we just allow a few minutes for it before the plane takes off, for those so inclined. Like the quiet moment of prayer before a high school football game. Oh, wait... um, never mind.
that is worth repeating:
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. and Amen!
thanks
I figured that...should have indicated it in my response...but picking on Iowa...can a state that keeps sending Tom Harkin to Washington DC be all that stupid? Maybe that was a bad example...
I’m just a backwoods hick and I know what they are.
Just sayin’....
I should have used South Dakota in my post, as it turns out - there’s about 300 Jews in that state, as opposed to about 6,000 in Iowa.
And that's all well and good for Christians, but this thread is about a Jew. And for Jews, this bears repeating:
And these words that I command you today shall be in your heart. And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
LOL!!!
Old age eyes, here. I thought it said minivan which made no sense to me. I was thinking, so, it's best to pray while carpooling? Thanks for the explanations, btw.
Well, I don’t know about the minivans, but imagine if they had had a minyan on the airplane!
As someone who puts on tefillin daily, when I have put them on on an airplane I have told my seatmates and the flight crew what I was about to do. Tefillin look different, and unlike anything else in contemporary American culture; I could see how it would be disturbing to someone concerned about strange “devices” to see someone wrapping black leather straps around his bare arm and on his head while reciting prayers written in a language that they can’t read (which might be taken to be Arabic).
