Obama Issues Directive to Shut Down Guantánamo (Blast from the past!)

WASHINGTON — President Obama signed executive orders Thursday directing the Central Intelligence Agency to shut what remains of its network of secret prisons and ordering the closing of the Guantánamo detention camp within a year, government officials said.

The orders, which are the first steps in undoing detention policies of former President George W. Bush, rewrite American rules for the detention of terrorism suspects. They require an immediate review of the 245 detainees still held at the naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to determine if they should be transferred, released or prosecuted.

...snip...

The order on Guantánamo says that the camp, which received its first hooded and chained detainees seven years ago this month, “shall be closed as soon as practicable, and no later than one year from the date of this order.”

He's going to ground terrorists on our soil? Give them Constitutional rights, the same as American citizens?

The jerk has come unglued! He hasn't a clue!

He can't blame this Executive Order on Bush.

Nope. He issued it a year ago tomorrow. He's got a deadline. Obviously, he won't meet it. I wonder how the MSM will cover this. ;)

Since he is Commander In Chief and has given a directive to a military post, absent rescinding the order, the base is required to close tomorrow.

However, Congress has not funded the closure and that makes the issue problematic for The Messiah.

Money appropriated by congress may only be spent for the reason it was appropriated and any change would not be allowed unless The Messiah went back to congress to re-color the money and congress must approve.

The O&M budget to Gitmo is a large chunk and he can't just take funds appropriated for running the camp and use those funds to close it, neither can he take any budget from RDT&E, Procurement, MILPERS, MILCON, etc. . . . Not legal.
