The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for the South Los Angeles, Long Beach and Whittier areas as a powerful new storm moves ashore.
The warning is expected to be in place for at least 45 minutes.
Radar shows heavy rain falling in Long Beach, with the storm moving in at 35 mph to the northeast. There were also reports of thunder and lightning across the region.
Forecasters said the storm was capable of producing a tornado, but there was no evidence at this time that any tornadoes have developed on land.
[Updated at 1:03 p.m.: The tornado warning was extended to Orange County. In Seal Beach, officials were urging people to get off the beach. In San Pedro, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported major street flooding in area near the harbor and ocean.
In East Long Beach, flood waters rose above some street and were filling the grass areas in front of some homes. There were reports of power outages, though exactly how widespread is not clear.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department is checking a report that a car driving on Pacific Coast Highway might have been damaged by the storm, but officials have not confirmed this.
Huntington Beach lifeguards said no waterspoutsor offshore tornadoeshave been spotted. The beaches were mostly empty while waves surged, lightning struck and wind reached gusts of 52 miles per hour, said Huntington Beach Marine Safety Lt. Mike Beuerlein.
Newport Beach was seeing wind gusts of over 72 miles per hour and has closed jetties due to high surf, but has seen no tornadoes or waterspouts, said Jennifer Schulz of the Newport Beach Fire Dept.]

All they need now is a car chase...
I have a good friend in Carmel....can’t reach there...you hear anything from there???
I always thought the seasons there ran: earthquake, fire, flood, and riot. I stand corrected, I guess.
I grew up in the Chico, CA area, and live there now. I’ve seen funnel clouds, and heard reports of others both in the North State, and in Central and Southern CA. While these events are certainly not as common as they are in other parts of the country, they do happen.
hahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa!!!!!!
I wonder how many homes in California have a basement? LOL! The bathroom is the next best place to be in a tornado.
I like the thing about dragging a mattress into the bathtub.
GREAT concept. However.
I'll take the dawg to the vet now and see what we can do for you. ;)
Storm Report:
PROBABLE TORNADO IN HUNTINGTON BEACH. BOATS UPLIFTED AND DAMAGED IN THE HB HARBOR. DAMAGE TO BUILDING IN AREAS. CAR FLIPPED 16400 PCH. (SGX)
How about the airport? I have to head in that direction ...
I remember that.
You should be in the clear...this storm is basically history. Big storm hits tomorrow afternoon.
Seal Beach provides services to the unincorporated area...hence why they say Seal Beach...
Sunset Beach is usually where the winter berm gets breached and some of the houses get some seawater flooding.
The TV stations are also showing flooding on city streets...likely Long Beach where a storm drain plugged up and hence the flooding.
Thanks.
Later then!
‘Don’t have to water the lawn all this week.
When did I work for Bateman...78, 79?.... Twenty-eighth floor, Broadway Plaza, 7th & Hill: The sky was so dark during a thunderstorm, I commented that it looked like a tornado sky. Sure enough one tore up part of the Sports Arena just to the south. Ah, for the days of Pio Pico....
A tornado touched down in Azusa in the late 50s or early 60s. I was five or six years old. It took out the palm tree right next to our house, and some pepper trees across the street.
“Im a native Californian. I dont EVER recall the word tornado being uttered in the same sentence as California. The worlds gone mad.”
Well, I remeber a couple of times, here in The OC.
Years ago, a tornado came in from the ocean side, and tore the roof off a house in my neighborhood. Same tornado threw several mobile homes off their footings. Topples some.
A few years later there was an equally strong tornado, which ran several miles from the ocean to the 405 freeway, toppling trees and fences.
By national standards, these aren’t much. But by local standards, we get some pretty violent storms coming off the ocean.
This stuff is getting reported as happening in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach,...etc....
Technically it is the Huntington Harbor part of Sunset Beach,...I am pretty sure...based on what I am seeing on the TeeVee.
Probably both PD's get involved since both cities provide services to the area.
Praying for you in L.A. Dita!!!!!
We had one that passed over our house in Glendora,CA. in the 90’s during the middle of the night. I could feel the suction of the windows..Of course Azusa was on the News..someone lost a patio roof. Those were the days, now I
live where they have real tornadoes!
