CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Officials at a Chattanooga hospital decided to stop hiring tobacco users.

Memorial Hospital Vice President Brad Pope told the Chattanooga Times Free Press the decision is an extension of the hospital's commitment to health and is not based on potential health care cost savings.

Any form of nicotine will make an applicant ineligible to be hired - even nicotine gum or a patch.

I suppose chronic alcoholics could be hired, though. Or drug abusers, etc.

If cigarettes are an addiction a case might be made under the Americans with Disabilities Act that this is illegal discrimination.

Oh, hell yes. Our company requires drug tests to get and keep your job. But the health insurance we offer is required to cover treatment for drug abuse. So we all have to pay for something we can't use.

I'm not sure of the legalities of refusing to hire people who use a legal and highly taxed product, or even a product designed to cure them from said addition. But we can sure force people to pay for treatment of those using illegal drugs!

That does it. I’m not hiring any more quiche eaters, or eaters of other lib-favorite foods.

As a patient who had to endure the “freshly smoked breath” of a smoker who was the nurse attending me, I would LOVE to see hospitals eliminate smoking on the job!

As it is, a hospital next door to my church is the “off-premises” for the smokers from the hospital - ER visitors and workers alike. It’s disgusting and the LAST smell I want around me when I am sick!

Or what about people who stick their privates into fecal matter.

Oh I forgot, they’re a protected class now.

One day, someone will finally expose the fallacies about smoking; somewhat akin to global warmimg fear mongers. Left alone and in its natural state, the tobacco leaf poses little threat when used in moderation...it just smells bad to some people and it does stain teeth and is used for a stain. Second-hand smoke is a bug-a-boo to scare little children....teachers have wrecked many a kiddo with their dire predictions....if only they could teach writing, arithmetic, and reading as well.

haha yup..

I will have a good laugh at all the self righteous anti smokers when the hospital bans “All hiring of any alcohol users”

Booze causes way more problems than smoking.. but big brother has not gone after it yet.. drink up folks.. because its coming.
