The Haitians are using whatever they can to rescue trapped people. They are disposing of their dead the best they can. There are pockets of trouble, but nothing massive. The whole of the society in Port au Prince was wiped out in thirty seconds on Tuesday. The government--gone. Jobs, stores, the economy--gone. Water, electric, sewage utilities--gone. Hospitals, clinics--gone.
I just saw Steve Harrigan on Fox report he saw Haitians, not foreign aid workers, distributing rice meals to their fellow Haitians.
The Haiti people have held up quite well considering all they've been through in the past four days.
Our rule of thumb is get the aid in by 72 hours. We haven't done that, thanks to our kow-towing to the bureaucracy.
I’m not saying they’re not attempting to help themselves and lord knows nobody can be prepared completely for a situation like this. They however had no preparation at all. They have done nothing to build up their country despite billions upon billions in aid over the year. I can tell you other carribean nations would have at least been able to make a start at helping their people.
