Because it's a Log10, which means, that the cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3...) are like an exponent, and when the exponent increases by one, the base increases by 10X. For example, 10² = 100, and 10³ = 1000. Log is just a different way of representing that.

I was in that quake, on vacation and downtown at the Wharf. That was a nightmare experience I will never forget, I cannot begin to imagine what the poor people of Haiti are going through, it is too awful for words.

The magnitude of quakes is exponential. Therefore a force 7 quake(Haiti) is 10 times stronger than a force 6 quake. That’s what he meant when he said less than half of the Haiti quake.
