The close Senate contest in usually reliably blue Massachusetts - a race that could prove crucial to the fate of President Obama's agenda - got tighter and uglier Thursday as the Democratic Party fought to hold on to the seat of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
Republican Scott Brown, who has tapped into widespread anger over health care reforms and the economy, surged to within two percentage points of Democrat Martha Coakley in the latest polling. The Rothenberg Political Report and the Cook Political Report, the two leading political handicapping services, shifted the race to the "tossup" category - in a state that hasn't sent a Republican to Congress since 1994 or to the Senate since 1972.
Democratic officials insisted they were not in panic mode, but the national party's campaign arm sent out a desperate fundraising plea linking Mr. Brown, a once little-known state senator, to the conservative "tea party" movement. Mrs. Coakley, the state attorney general, stepped up her attacks by accusing Mr. Brown of "trying to run away from his right-wing record and the extreme groups that support him."
Massachusetts Republican Party spokeswoman Tarah Donoghue said the Coakley campaign was stooping to "desperate and dirty campaign tactics" as the race tightened.
A Coakley loss in the special election Tuesday would have far-reaching implications for Mr. Obama and his party, ending the Senate Democrats' 60-vote supermajority and jeopardizing Mr. Obama's health care reform proposal and other domestic initiatives. It also would send a chilling message to all Democratic candidates on the ballot in November, even those in supposedly safe seats.

Well. Just . . . darn, huh?
Finally the MSM is catching up with what I wrote about earlier in the week..........I said that a Brown win will make Obama a lame duck and that it will be the House rather than the Senate that will be his undoing.........my complete post from Wednesday..........
The talking heads of the MSM still fail to grasp the significance of the Senate election in Massachusetts next week. The desperate move yesterday by the DNC to pump money into Coakley’s faltering campaign should be a clear signal of what is at stake, but still the MSM doesn’t get it.
The ‘it’ is that if Brown should somehow upset Coakley in the special election next week, Obama will be a lame duck after only one year. The ‘talking heads’ and conventional wisdom are that even should Brown pull the ‘upset of the century’(it is still only 2010, lol), the corruptocrats will just delay his swearing in and have their appointed lackey cast the 60th vote in the Senate to get Obamacare passed.
What the MSM and pundits fail to realize, and what Rangel is intimating in the above article is that the HOUSE OF REPS is a real problem to getting Obamacare passed. IF Brown wins, no amount of arm twisting by Speaker Pelosi and the White House will be able to round up enough votes in the House to pass Obamacare.
While only 1/3rd of the Senate is up for re-e;ection each two years, 100% of the House has to stand before the voters in November 2010. The shock of a Brown upset will cause defections in the House of massive proportions when it comes to backing Obamacare, Cap and Trade, card Check, Immigration reform, a 2nd ‘stimulus’, and every other of Obama’s priorities.
Obama has done NOTHING to court Republican support for any of his initiatives. The Dems have closed off the Republicans because they thought they could get away with it. What they will find out if Brown wins, is that they suddenly ‘need’ Republican support to get ANYTHING passed. After dissing the Republicans for a year, that support will be impossible to come by. Last night I watched an interview with a Tenn Rep Congressman who was a doctor by trade. He was livid that he had made repeated offers to help in crafting a health plan that would actually work, and the White House did not even respond to his repeated offers. They did not turn him down, they just IGNORED his letters.
The hubris of this Administration has been on display for a year now and the people are not buying what they are trying to sell us. A defeat in the Senate race in Mass will turn the POTUS into a lame duck because his own party will abandon him when they realize the consequences of supporting his radical agenda.
My prediction is if Brown wins, Pelosi will be ousted as speaker (assuming the Dems can even hold on to a majority in 2010), Reid will retire rather than be defeated in November, and Obama will be too arrogant to make an accomodations with the Republicans and therefore his legislative agenda will be dead.
I think you are spot on. I think some Democrats are probably rooting for a Brown win so they don’t have to commit political suicide in passing this HC legislation.
I truly believe even if Scott Brown does lose, the Democrats know for sure they are in big trouble in 2010.
Larry Sabato also suggested on FOX this morning that a Brown win would cause ‘moderate’ Senate Dems to reevaluate their vulnerability to angry voter actions.
EXACTLY! I truly believe even if Scott Brown does lose, he has won. To make competitive and/or come close where the Rat usually runs 20-40% ahead will tell the rest of the House Rats they are toast this mid term. I will truly believe in a Scott Brown win when I see it. Wow what a shot if he does. I love that previous post...
I love the smell of Democratic panic in the morning and its the last weekend before the election.
Massachusetts 'tossup' threatens Obama agenda
I think it should read:
Massachusetts 'tossup' threatens Obama REGIME
This is the first nail in the regime's coffin, followed by the sledgehammer in '10 and the shovel in '12.
The Fuhrer and the thugs in his Administration have been found out and his SS/Gestapo in Congress are next.
I agree. Whether Scott Brown (R-MA) wins or not, the Democrats will go into super-secret panic mode. Now is the time for all of us to write our Democratic congressmen and let them know in no uncertain terms, that the fate that awaits Martha Coakley (D-MA) will become theirs. Demand they vote against final passage of this HellCare bill!
“..the national party’s campaign arm sent out a desperate fundraising plea linking Mr. Brown, a once little-known state senator, to the conservative “tea party” movement. “
It can only HELP him.
Obama’s PERSONAL popularity is distinct from public opinion on his POLICIES.
EVENTUALLY, most Americans will realize his POLICIES are the views of OBAMA.
This is sort of like the early colonials’ views of King George III being the benevolent monarch while all those nasty taxes were only the product of the evil ministerial forces!!
Good analysis. Have you considered applying to Fox News as a pundit? ;>)
It’s not a “toss-up”.
It’s a “toss-out”...
It can only HELP him.
They are so blinded by their hatred of all things American that they sincerely believe being associated with 'the teabaggers' is a BAD thing!
*shrug* It’s more concise than milwguy’s post, but I think he said it better.
Re: Healthcare, Coakley and you...
I don't care who ya are...that there's funny. (Was the Boston Tea Party really considered inappropriate activity in Massachusetts?)
