If liberal politics and good intentions helped all students learn, then Berkeley High School should be an exemplar to all California. Yet, according to its governance council, Berkeley High was identified last year as the high school with "the largest racial equity/achievement gap in the state."
The worst part, as far as low-performing students are concerned, is that you can't expect the school district to turn its record underachievement around - not when its governance council, which makes recommendations to the school board on operations, approves a plan with a preamble that quotes Karl Marx: "From each according to his (or her) ability, to each according to his (or her) need."
Then there's the science lab issue. Last month, the East Bay Express reported that the council was working to eliminate science labs at Berkeley High. The story burned through the Internet as it fed into the town's stereotype as a left-wing bubble that puts political correctness before all else.

They might as well run classes on running a cash register at McDonalds or the proper way to hold up a liquor store if they think that eliminating science will help their kids. At least they can probably get volunteers from UCB to help the kis apply for welfare.
Seems like every Education department academic treats children as the rats and schools as the maze (or Skinner box).
The real tragedy is that the Black Ku Klux Klan Groups....and the Hispanic Ku Klux Klan Groups (which is what I will refer to any racial special interest group now)....seem to be more concerned with “Getting Back At Whitey”.....and not concerned that Liberals and. Democrats think that “Black and Hispanic students are so dumb we have to lower standards”.
They aren’t dumbing down the schools because of the white and Asian kids....
I thought socialism was a science. lol.
Old Ben may need to check the dictionary but I don't think the chronically wrongicle is using the word "exemplar" correctly there.
Or maybe it's the grammar which is wrong. "exemplar to"? "exemplar for"?
Ordinary usage would be ‘exemplar for’. Less common would be ‘exemplar of’. ‘To’ is somewhat unusual, but I can’t locate any source that says that ‘to’ would be substandard in this usage.
My guess is that the minority students at Berkeley perform as well or better than their minority peers nationwide. That the achievement gap is larger is probably due to an overrepresentation of kids whose parents teach at UCBerserkeley. These kids are probably largely nonminority, and very high performers.
IOW, the gap is unlikely to change unless they find a way to depress the performance of the white and Asian kids. Which is not very likely given the academic background of their parents.
I think comparing demo groups has worn out its welcome. The emphasis should be on insuring that kids are performing consistent with their own strengths and interests.
