That is becoming a viable option in a lot places already. Structurally they could easily withstand an earthquake better than a masonry building, properly secured and welded I would much rather ride out a big quake in something like this than most buildings.

Shipping container homes are incredible! They’re even being used to build Army housing. Seems to me some charitable group should get involved in Haiti and make this a viable (and affordable) housing option.

Container Buildings Not only that but you could prefab the whole structure, then store it until you need it. Instant FEMA emergency response shelters. Just throw them on a C-17 or sling them under a Chinook and fly them to where you need them. Earthquake, flood, town wiped out by tornadoes, just send in an "Instant Hotel".
And since they are designed around standard containers the trucks, trains, ships to transport them are probably already on site.
And for third world holes like Haiti, Afghanistan or any of the others. Well they are a lot more sturdy and forgiving of neglect than a tar-paper or corrugated iron shack.
