US evangelical preacher Pat Robertson levied blame Wednesday for the devastating earthquake in Haiti on Haitians themselves, saying that the country "swore a pact to the devil" at its creation.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show "The 700 Club." Haitians were originally "under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil," said the 80-year-old former presidential candidate.
"They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal," the televangelist said.
"Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other."

“Swore a pact with the devil” describes every country in the world. Robertson needs to read his Bible. This is a fallen world. No one is good - not one. No country is good - not one. The world is already punished but man has also been saved if those that seek Him will do so.
I have mixed feelings about remarks like this, and in all honesty, don’t know what to conclude.
Would there be a tangible difference between two countries if one acknowledged and tried very hard to honour God and His word, and the other actually did make a “pact” with the devil...whatever that is?
I don’t like to hear Pat Robertson (or anyone else) make such pronouncements because I know how it will be received. Maybe everyone should just keep these kinds of thoughts to themselves. None of us are in a position to be telling the world that such devastation is because of disobedience toward God. God can take care of that.
Perhaps we should just be there to help, and, if possible, set the nation on a new and prosperous course. Perhaps this is what may come of this horror, and makes more sense than continuing to throw money at them.
Well, what should we expect...Remember the Word? Blessed is the nation who's God is the Lord? When you lie down with dogs and all that!
I agree completely.
Who cares...I say point it out! It’s our responsibility...If there is a reason that evil prevails...point it out and then bless the people and show them the right way...
"They need to have -- and we need to pray for them -- a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic something good may come,"
Seems to me that pointing out a problem -- and guiding his flock to pray for G_d to resolve it -- is right dead center in the job description of a preacher.
(For background, check the actions of any of the Old Testament [Jewish] prophets...)
The most desperate people do the most desperate things.
The right answer to “WWJD?” is rarely “who cares?”

I can imagine his conversation with God ahead of the broadcast:
God, “Pat, on your show today I want you to mention that Haiti was founded by people who were voodoo worshipers.
Pat, “Ah common God can't you give me a break? Remember what happened with the AIDS thing, and the hurricane thing, and the Supreme Court thing, and the feminist...”
God, “Pat, stop your whining.”
Pat, “But God even Christians will be picking on me again and everybody will be calling me an idiot again.”
God, “You know my most devoted follower never whines like this; he just does what he's told.”
Pat, “But he is not even a natural born...”
God, “Pat, I am making him destroy the greatest country on my green earth.”
Pat, “But I don't think he even liked...”
God, “Pat, I made him give up his one true love.”
Pat, “But I don't think the thing with Larry would have ever worked out any...”
God, “Pat, did you ever think about who I made him marry instead.”
Pat, “Please forgive me lord. I am your faithful servant and will make myself look like an ass when ever you command.”
Yep, yep! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that one...Of course The new agers will be blaming and cursing God ...
Pat will raise untold scores of relief money for the people of Haiti. Run a search on Operation Blessing. It is one of the most honest and efficient charities on earth. He believes somewhere along the way their leader sold them into bondage to the devil. Can anyone prove it is not so? There is more evidence to support Pat Robertson’s OPINION than not.

No, what we want you to believe is that God had mercy on all those babies and wanted them back in heaven now rather than grow up and die and go to Hell.
I wonder how come the Sacramento Bee, et al can say the same kind of thing about 9/11 and no controversy? To wit, the best and brightest Bee brains opined that 9/11 was a result of America’s “sins” because we are mean and do not try to understand the rest of the world.
Seems pretty uninterested in getting the details straight (ya know, the French, or whatever) in the casting of a scandalous accusation.
Who vowed this? Why were they stuck with it? (It is at the least not possible to sell somebody else’s soul to the devil.) Now if voodoo and the like goes on there today, resulting in slavery to wicked superstitions, then blame the current practitioners. But there doesn’t seem to be any modern scientifically verifiable link between this kind of thing and natural disasters.
Ha, I don’t propose to answer for Jesus...Just the numbnuts who think they have the answer instead.

Like the time He instructed the Israelites to offer comfort to those left alive after He brought down the walls of Jericho? Like that? I find it interesting that you imply Robertson is wrong for speculating on what God would do or allow to happen. But you are doing nothing different in deciding what God would not do.
Better still you wrote: "Even if Robertsons notion is correct, I dont believe for a second Christ wouldve said that at this particular time. Um, if Robertsons notion is correct, then God either brought this calamity or allowed a demonic attack based on Haiti's "contract". What would you "believe"? That Christ would walk the streets saying "be at peace"?
It was an observation. I kind of doubt anyone there is getting all worked up over what they saw on the 700 club about now.
Allow me to speculate: I'll wager that in that same segment Robertson offered up prayers and called for aid from viewers and discussed what they are currently doing to send assistance. Does anyone know?
If it happened the media wouldn't report that because it would ruin the quote that portrays Christians badly.
Well that’s all well and good as far as it goes. I doubt that Pat has the same kind of prophecy line to God that Jeremiah, etc. had which told them that yes, God has targeted this or that natural disaster at this or that people as a specific penalty for specific sins.
But it is up to the Haitians whether or not they want to make lemonade out of this lemon.
Killjoy, when you have done as much in this world as Pat Robertson then maybe you will have some credibility. Pat is an old guy now but he has spoken much truth and maybe he needs to retire. God has blessed him richly. What you said just seems totally out of line. Just my opinion.
