I was listening to FOX and the Dominican Republic doesn’t sound like it was hit as badly, but according to one report the Dominican Republic government tried to contact the Haitian government to offer assistance, and COULD NOT CONTACT ANYONE. Having been in Haiti, this doesn’t surprise me too much, but being in Port Au Prince on a good day is a bad experience. It’s been raining the last couple of days and I’m trying to imagine all those concrete cinderblock buildings collapsing in a city of 3 million with no communications, no electricity, no garbage pickup and half the population living in tents anyway. Haiti is close to Hell without a natural disaster.
Thanks. My husband and I have gone on short-term teams to the Dominican Republic. Our teams built a school that doubles as a hurricane shelter. Lots of rebar in that building, as well as concrete block around the roof. Not sure how that’s supposed to make it better, but that’s what the engineer told us to do.
