This was solved by buying an additive which increased the octane rating and effectively leaded the gas.

I'd sure like to know what additive.

I am not sure. But, I guy I knew had a 1965 Corvette and he had to have an additive that took the place of the lead in gas sothat he would not mess up the valve train.

If you check with a speed shop, I will bet you they can tell you.
