Hands shot up in the press briefing room to the question of who wants a news conference -- an issue raised today by the veteran White House reporter, Helen Thomas, who will be celebrated by colleagues next week for 50 years of covering the White House and the publication of her new book, Listen Up, Mr. President.

Who wants a news conference?

"Who wants to win the lottery?'' Gibbs asked.

Are you saying our chances are the same? a reporter asked.

Very interesting that the journalist from another age let her reporter roots speak, in place of her leftist roots.

She is not as ethics-challenged as the current crop of men and women with the WH Press credentials.

Before reading your post, I would have bet that Helen Thomas would be the first to approach the issue. Good for her!!!
Congrats to her for working for fifty years - anywhere!
