Extreme cold weather in Norway caused the closure of a Norwegian gas supply processing centre which has impacted on the UK. Yet another National Grid gas alert has been issued and this time the UK government is appealing in desperation for extra gas to be pumped into the UK system from overseas. There is now a real danger that the supply of gas to the UK could be crippled in the days ahead unless alternative arrangements can be made immediately.

I thought this would be a good thing. Without gas there will be less of that evil carbon being pumped into the atmosphere.

Wow, that’s some serious stuff, hard to imagine a country could run out of energy but the truth is now that we’ve come to rely on systems for energy we are all pretty vunerable, this is why I instisted on a real wood burning fireplace, we can’t heat the entire house with it but we can stay alive, sure the pipes would all freeze but I’d shut off the water and we could use snow melt ...

Why am I having trouble believing that Norwegians can’t deal with extreme cold? The situation in the UK is of their own making.Fail to plan, plan to fail.

In the UK it may be illegal to go about and collect firewood from other’s property. It may also be illegal to burn things in your fireplace to warm yourself. Remember, this is England we are talking about. Don’t know if it is still true, but the British used to have to prepay their electric and gas bills to obtain power. They used to have coin boxes in their homes for gas, electric, and TV. Pay as you go. Should be interesting if things get ugly in England. Don’t see Labour Party coming out of this one successfully. Too bad, so sad.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that UK stored gas reserves had fallen to six hours. After further briefings with National Grid, we understand the figure is actually seven days. The discrepancy resulted from a misunderstanding of how the supply data was presented. We apologise for the error.

lol you got to “love” the news network. We all gonna die in 6 hours!!!! ups now we have 7 days untill we will have to die. Agreed grab your gun and start rioting in the streets because this time it´s all over ;-)

well i guess this strongly depends where you live. i guess it could be more difficult to collect firewood if you live in the inner city of London then in the “countyrside” for example don´t you think? at least now we know the people of New york are save anyway they still can cut down the central park for firewood. i guess this will save 10.000 or more? people for one day. ;-)

Never been to England, but remember hearing of stiff fines for trespass on agricultural lands and forests. My understanding is the available forests are tightly managed with all produce from trees recognized as the property of the owner of the land. This would include gleaning the fallen limbs in the forest. Short answer - firewood is expensive in England.

Comrad and CHEKA officer Yevgraf Zhivago's thoughts upon catching his brother Dr. Yuri Zhivago pulling wood from a fence:

I told myself it was beneath my dignity to arrest a man for pilfering firewood. But nothing ordered by the party is beneath the dignity of any man. And the party was right: one man desperate for a bit of fuel is pathetic; five million people desperate for fuel will destroy a city.

The British used to make gas from coal, which they still have quite a bit of. They don't do that sort of thing any more. Like the US they have become dependent on foreign supplies, and when those supplies get cut off you freeze. But look at all the carbon credits they will be getting. Probably enough to pay for burying all the frozen corpses.

Ho ho.

Watch for the return of the traditional British coal fire or even the peat fires of yester year.

This is Gordon Browns version of the “Winter of Discontent”. The problems are different, but will prove as fatal to his premiership as thew 1979 strikes were to James Callaghan’s

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_of_Discontent

Having people freeze in the months before a General Election is just plain stupid. Buh, bye, Brown...

well i have been to england (but to be honest it was allways london so i guess this disqualifies me too to judge about the rules and laws in england especially in the rual areas. but in generell i would just take my own country for example. of course it´s illegal to collect “wood” from your neighbour (i don´t think that is differentt in the US) but then again. in a rual area who cares? if you go camping who really cares if you had collected some fallen wood? i mean people are people and normaly as long as you don´t stress anyone most people tend to be very tolerant. at least this is my impression. as long as you don´t camp in front of his/her house most people even don´t notice it. and even if they do most people just say do you know this is private property? if not ok now you know it. but as long you don´t stress anyone. enjoy the time and then leave the place like you have found it and all is fine.

Yep, had a furnace malfunction last night, but the fireplace and kerosene heater kept things warm... enough.

There was a story a couple days ago where pensioners were buying encyclopedias and other large books from thrift shops as fuel. It was cheaper than real fuel.

anyway should be mentioned my best impression of america have been the people. just for example. i visited chicago (the more outer limmits) because a girlfriend of mine. i have gone jogging every day because to be honest your food just makes you fat if you don´t do anything about it ;-)
I remeber the first day i was running around i was eyed with extreme suspection. i really did feel the not spoken “question” “who to hell is this guy?”on day 3 they started do greet me when i was running around. on day 7 i was invited to a barbecue!!! and this will never happen in europe! not that the people don´t like others but europeans are more or less reserved if they meet “strangers”. and this is what in my oppinion makes the US unice. It´s the people not some kind of government.
