Recent minority interviews for NFL coaching jobs in Washington and Seattle under the Rooney Rule have raised questions whether the spirit of the rule has been violated.
Former Colts coach Tony Dungy wonders about the process used by the Redskins, who interviewed assistant coach Jerry Gray for the head coaching position last month even though Jim Zorn still held the job.
The Seahawks met with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday amid reports that Southern California coach Pete Carroll would be hired regardless of how impressive Frazier was.

"The idea of the rule is to slow down the process and get teams to do their homework and investigate a lot of candidates, not just minority candidates," he said. "You went through the process, and in doing that sometimes you uncover people."
That's what happened when the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin over assistants Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm in 2007. Dungy believes Frazier's numerous interviews - the Rams, Broncos, Lions, Dolphins, Falcons have spoken to him in past years, and he remains among the front-runners for the Buffalo position - will pay off, too.
"Even in cases where you don't get the job, I know Leslie interviewed with the Dolphins and know Bill Parcells came away impressed and told other people how impressed he was, and he is a sharp guy and that helps," Dungy said. "That goes a ways in promoting that diversity."

Dungy and rule-maker Rooney aren't necessarily stupid, and aren't necessarily bad men, but they seem to believe that skin color is vitally important, but only on the sidelines. They seem to want "Affirmative Action" for black coaches, but not for white players. And Dungy's disappointed that the spirit of the coach-skin-color rule gets ignored. Maybe he is stupid.

Dungy’s an imbecile and Rooney should be sued for discrimination. IF “diversity” is so important to them, why don’t they care there aren’t more white, latino, or asian men playing positions such as cornerback in the NFL? Should coaches be required to try out cornerbacks that are any color other than black because the last non-black to play the position was Jason Sehorn? That’s as ridiculous as the “Rooney Rule,” itself.

Surely we will take this discussion the way we will, however, the point is that they have a rule and they have recently made a mockery of it and the NFL and the Fritz Pollard group are acting like it isn’t happening.
It should be noted that Dan Rooney is now ambassador to Ireland after being appointed by Obama. Rooney is also the uncle of Fla congressman Brian Rooney and his brother Tom who was recruited by the NRCC to carpetbag in michigan’s 7th district race.

The Rooney rule is not needed in the NFL, period. Even black assistants, etc., know its a farce, especially when GMs already have their mind set on another coach and interview them to satisfy the rule. It happened in Detroit. It almost happened in Seattle.
First of all, isn’t it insulting to interview somebody...just because of their skin color.
Second of all, has anybody dared to compile a stat with the winning percentages of coaches by color? I suspect black coaches have a lower winning percentage...purely because teams are pressured into hiring lesser qualified coaches, to satisfy the Rooney rule.
Its almost as if every team now has to go through a pergatory, with a coach they don’t want, before they can hire their no. 1 coach. In Kansas, we witnessed this with the Chiefs, and their stint with Herm Edwards. But, it also happened at a the college level - Kansas State hired a guy named Ron Prince to be their head coach, and kept him a few years, to ‘punch their ticket’. Never heard of him? Go figure.
There is just something immoral about affirmative action that bugs the h@ll out of me.
The "spirit" of the rule was that the NFL needed to placate the black power movement, which was going to bleed them dry if they didn't do something.
So how do you violate that "spirit", except by actually hiring black people to be head coaches?
Marvin Lewis too. The only reason both men weren't golfing this season is because of their race.
If Jim Mora were black there is no way the Seahawks would have fired him after only one season.
Owners and fans want to win. AQny equal opportunity BS is just that. It shouldn’t matter if they hire a jackass as a coach or player. can they win? in with meritocracy...out with discriminatory rules.
Another day, another black racist. Real disappointed in Dungy. Guess he cut the part out of his Bible about equally in the eyes of God. Drop the Christian pretense, Tony; you’re just another black who puts pigmentation above all else.
I believe Tony is a good man who is terribly misguided on this issue.
He actually lessens his accomplishments and abilities as a coach supporting this disingenuous dog and pony show of interviewing on skin color.
