I pay a TON in both federal, state, and local taxes - should I pay more just to ride my bike a few hours a week?

Yes, you should pay more. If your nanny state really wanted you and others around you to be safe you would be treated just like people that drive cars. That's means you would be required to have a yearly registration fee and sticker, a yearly inspection and fee, a license would be required too so you know the rules. You would also be required to have insurance since you could be injured or injure others with your moving vehicle.

I too pay a ton of taxes why do i pay more just to drive my car 18 miles a day?

Under the socialist philosophy of "Smart Growth" government planners are reducing car travel lanes and adding bike lanes. It now takes twice as long to drive around Greater Boston than it did ten years ago. Should car drivers waste more of their time for the pleasure of a very small number of non taxed bicyclists? We even had our local state representative file and get passed a "Bicycle Bill of Rights." Of coarse the bill did not include punitive measures for adult bicyclists who ride their bikes on sidewalks traveled by adults and children dodging them.
