I heard on Fox News just this morning that the problem with Republicans is they wait and wait to apologize. The Dems get that apology done immediately which changes the story. Makes sense actually. Trent Lott waited until the story was a disaster and bigger than it needed to be to apologize. That is the difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Trent Lott waited until the story was a disaster and bigger than it needed to be to apologize. The "story" should have never been a story to begin with and NO apology was necessary. It was a comment made at a private affair to an old friend. Why the hell should he apologize. I'm sure Jesse Helms did not require an apology.
Actually, TomGuy has the correct answer in post #9.

reid made his comments in 2008. Lott’s comments were reported on right away and he apologized within a week. The difference is, not many were willing to forgive Lott. Seems the media plays a part in this, too.

Given the template and narrative that are followed the timing of an apology are irrelevant. If you are on the right side of the aisle and say anything that may be construed as politically incorrect the media will make sure that you are toast.
