You're exactly right. With a "Popular Vote", all politians would have to do is win New York, California, Florida, and one other populous state, to win the "Popular Vote". With the Electoral College, it gives each state a vote and a voice. Our founding fathers knew what they were doing.
Unfortunatly, so do those who want to destroy our nation. Soros is no Kennedy. He makes Kennedy look like a Boy Scout. Soros is the guy that bought and paid for Kennedy and his entire Democrat party.

If the EC was gone, you might as well stop thinking in terms of “winning states” - it will not matter; that’s the point.
When you can win an election by a simple majority of the vote, start thinking in terms of “factions,” which would be spread across the fifty states.
The broadest factions would be, of course, those who want the government to provide for them vs. those who want to provide for themselves. As has been said many times before, the “takers” are beginning to outnumber the “givers” - so the only thing keeping the Marxist wolf from the door is the EC.
Right now, most of the takers are concentrated in the big cities, and because of the EC they can only deliver to a candidate like Obama those particular states, whose impact can be blunted by a collection of smaller, fly-over states.
But without the EC? Fuhgettaboutit. Those populations would overwhelm the small states - who would then have virtually no voice in government.
Anybody that tells you that a majority vote is the most fair vote is lying to you to gain power.
