Why are you asking me? I was watching the game.
Do I have to go to Google Maps?

Ferndale is way way way way up north near Eureka, as far as I can tell. 2 Hundred miles or so.

I had only been in California for a short while when the ‘89 quake hit. I was in a meeting with 2 California natives. They went straight under a table, and I joined them. I got a little more concerned when I asked them if this was a typical earthquake and they both said “NO!”.
I hated the way the earth felt after the earthquake. It felt like you were on the ocean. I remember driving home and one of the after shocks hit and the telephone polls were moving.
I didn’t like that earthquake.

THANKS MUCH.
Have often wondered about such details.
Do you have a table comparing the 8 scales at different magnitudes?

North of Watsonville. On a ridge in Aptos, adjacent to Niscene Marks State Park. The epicenter is on that same ridge. Way too close for comfort.
Were you here for the “big one”?

I remember that the bridges were closed for quite sometime. The Bay Bridge opened just before (or right on) Thanksgiving. I was going to Oroville - in N. California - for Thanksgiving and it was the first day the Bay Bridge was open. I can laugh now but it was terrifying. Nobody was obeying the speed limits - I think we went 70+ to get over ASAP.

How much the quake varies on each scale differs with the nature of the quake.
USGS description is here (the final magnitude for large near-surface quakes - the ones that matter - are all Mw (Moment Magnitude.)

I was about 5 miles from the epicenter at Loma Prieta back in ‘89 down in San Jose. I could see the peak from my back yard. Rock n roll.

Wow. I was in my dorm at Michigan State, watching the World Series with floor mates when Al Michaels flipped out. We were glued to the TV for the next 24 hours.

Bush was at the Cowboys game in Jerry Jones’ suite. Not his fault this time. ;)
