ESPN analyst Craig James, whose complaints about the way his son was treated led to the dismissal of Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, may be considering a career change.
The former SMU football player said this week that he might consider running for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchisons seat when she steps down this year.
"Im a Texan. Im concerned for our country," James told WFAA-TV. "I disagree with the approach that were having, things that are taking place, and so whatever door opens up, Ill look at it, if and when it opens up."
James, 49, joins a growing list of at least a half-dozen Texans who have expressed interest in running for Hutchisons seat.

I have no intention of voting for James for anything — never have particularly appreciated folks who try to capitalize on their name recognition and morph into politics.
However, I can assure you that if the James kid had been my son, Leach would have preferred the wrath of God over my reaction. There is no excuse whatsoever for how he treated that kid, and likely others before him. “Suck it up” only goes so far, particularly when a player’s health is in danger.
So there are really no good guys in the story, as far as I’m concerned. And no good guy likely to occupy the governor’s mansion anytime soon.
Pity. We should be able to do better.
Bill Clements, Republican governor of Texas, was chairman of the SMU Board of Governors that managed the players’ slush fund that ultimately earned the school the NCAA death penalty.
As I said in a previous post, no good guys in this story, and we can do better.
My vote also goes to Michael Williams, at least as of now.
bttt
How is Perry on immigration? The role of government and fiscal restraint? What are your issues with him. Thanks.
Perry says whatever his audience wants to hear. He has, in his years in office, proven to be a smooth talker who is more than willing to sell us out when convenient.
Kind of like Hutchison.
Google “rick perry” with “trans texas corridor” or “gardisil” or “eminient domain” and start reading.
That said, I will in all likelihood vote for Perry in March and November. The most important issue for the person we elect to the governorship this fall will be congressional redistricting triggered by new census figures. It is absolutely critical that a Republican governor oversee this process, including calling special sessions of our legislature that (fortunately) meets regularly only every two years.
Ironically, while I don’t trust Perry on anything else, I do trust him to do right in redistricting, primarily because it’s in his own best political interest. He has proven that he can do this, and Medina is too inexperienced, Hutchison too wishy-washy.
The issue isn’t whiny parents. They’re a dime a dozen. Look at what they did to the U. of Arkansas program.
You wouldn’t be saying that if the kid in question were your son.
At least, I would hope not. But maybe you’re a crappy parent. They’re a dime a dozen, too.
Bottom line: James was faking the symptoms so he could skip out of practice. But even if we assume he wasn't, being told to go wait in a dark room did not endanger him in any way.
Craig James is an arrogant punk with a huge sense of entitlement. And it seems he raised a son who is as bad, if not worse, than he is.
James would fit in nicely with all the politicians and now he can add killing another football program with his self-serving BS.
The truth of the matter about his son is we don’t know the truth of the matter. By all accounts his son was an entitled punk.
Yep, the dude showed up to practice in street clothes and sunglasses complaining about the sun hurting his eyes. Coach just sent him to a place where the sun didn’t shine for the duration of practice.
There’s much to this sordid event that we don’t know and may never know.
BTW, what kind of consrvative is he? Rep. or Dim?
you have no idea about what Leach did. The infamous "closet" incident happened day 24 hours AFTER he received the concussion. So the day AFTER he came to practice and was probably not allowed to dress but expected to participate in non contact drill, I suppose. Then 3 days after the concussion the player again was told to go rest in a closet or shed or whatever.
Without knowing what grade of concussion there is no way anybody could post here or anywhere what the treatment or follow up is.
Leach probably wanted to make sure that James wasn't goofing off and playing up his concussion by skipping practice, so he made him waste time but not hang out on the sidelines. Actually he did the right thing, there was NO CHANCE that Adam James was going to get a second concussion by sitting in the shed/room/closet. The trainers were put there to make sure he didn't leave.. but if you think about it. It would be the same as being in an observation ward and not being able to leave. The only thing James didn't have was X-Box or friends around.
From what I saw of the young man smiling and videotaping the "closet" , I think he's a douche. However Leach made the fatal error of not realizing that no matter how big you are (I quote Bob Dylan) "ya gotta serve somebody. It may be the Devil or the Lord, but ya gotta serve somebody".
So ESPN, the Tech administration and the James family had a Leach throw down and got his rear booted.
I've seen the same thing many times. No matter how big you think you are, you're somebody's b#tch.
Yes, daring to disagree with you makes me a crappy parent. Well, I’ve learned my lesson!
Excellent. Glad to do my part.
Weak response. Are you going to respond to the facts posted above regarding this situation, or just slink off the thread?
It’s appalling to me how people will countenance bad behavior if sports are involved.
That goes for both players and coaches.
I like a good game of football. I also think Mike Leach is an outstanding football coach. Odd, in an entertaining way, and a winner.
But if a teacher, or an administrator, or your boss, or any other adult in a position of authority had done what he did to that kid, you’d be wanting to throw the book at them.
Can you imagine a young employee sustaining a concussion on the job and the boss telling him to go sit in an air-conditioned janitor’s closet? What an uproar would ensue.
But this was sports, and this was a good coach, and folks don’t like the kid’s dad, so it gets political, and so it’s OK to rationalize the appalling facts of the case.
It doesn’t matter who the kid was or who his dad was. Politics are not an issue. Intentionally mistreating another human being is, in the minds of most of us, bad behavior.
I’m impressed that Tech did the right thing with Leach. From what I hear about prior efforts to get rid of him, it’s pretty easy to believe that this isn’t the first time he’s crossed the line, just the first time there was enough proof to can him.
I hope he learned his lesson and is able to find another job coaching.
So there. I just responded to the facts of the case.
If my kid was an entitled crybaby who was always looking for an angle to shirk responsibility, I'd tell him he was taught a valuable lesson. I wouldn't want my kid to think it was acceptable to leave practice so he can go back to his apartment and sleep. Of course, I'm not an arrogant punk like Craig James so my kid will never be so ill-mannered.
Can you imagine a young employee sustaining a concussion on the job and the boss telling him to go sit in an air-conditioned janitors closet? What an uproar would ensue.
Terrible analogy. This is more akin to a warehouse worker hurting his back, and being told to go perform office work. Completely acceptable provided a doctor approved, and the much better analogy.
I’ve seen your posts on several of these threads. Do you have any ties to the James gang, ESPN, ABC, or Disney?
