6 January 2009 (MET Office date error)
In most winters, and certainly those in the last 20 years or so, our winds normally come from the south-west. This means air travels over the relatively warm Atlantic and we get mild conditions in the UK. However, over the past three weeks the Atlantic air has been blocked and cold air has been flowing down from the Arctic or the cold winter landmass of Europe.
The low temperatures in the UK have also been accompanied by snow. This is because areas of low pressure have been running in from the north-east, tracking across the North Sea and picking up moisture along the way, which falls as snow.
However, it is not cold everywhere in the world. North-east America, Canada, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and south-west Asia have all seen temperatures above normal in many places by more than 5 °C, and in parts of northern Canada, by more than 10 °C.
Is it colder than average?
The mean UK temperature for December was 2.1 °C, making it the coldest for 14 years and colder than the long-term average for December of 4.2 °C. However, December was one of only two months in 2009 which had a below-average mean temperature.
What does this say about climate change?
Climate change is taking place as the earth continues to warm up.In the UK, 2009 as a whole was the 14th-warmest on record (since 1914). This above-average temperature trend was reflected globally, with 2009 being the fifth-warmest year on the global record (since 1850).
The current cold weather in the UK is part of the normal regional variations that take place in the winter season. It doesnt tell us anything about climate change, which has to be looked at in a global context and over longer periods of time.
Al Gore? Obama? Santa Clause? internet? the devil? hell I give up~~~
Dick Cheney's weather machine is on the fritz?
They’re not as stoopid as people think. They just have an agenda. The stupid people are the ones that listen to them.
OK... for those of us that watch Ice Road Truckers...:^)
Yellowknife Tomorrow (-26C) Hi (-30C) Lo
Average from Environment Canada
(-23C) avg Hi (-31C) avg Lo.
Sounds colder to me...:^)
What’s causing the cold weather?
Simple.
With dems fiercely negotiating behind closed doors they have all that hot air locked up and cannot escape so we have intensely cold weather.
LIES. I am in Canada of course, and I speak to people every week from one end of the country to the other, the only place with warmer temps is Vancouver but this is nothing new, it's always warm there. Everywhere else is freezing. It is minus 24 with the wind chill where I am. These people are blatant liars.
I think you just discovered a new universal constant of physics.
From the Titanic testimony:
Question: What exactly is an iceberg made of, Mr. Lightoller?
Answer: Ice
Long time since I heard those lyrics:)
And, you are making typos, more global warming, Bush caused it stuff:). Just kidding, I agree with your comment.
To be fair not US NorthEast but American Northeast - ie the North American continent - which has indeed been exceptionally warm in Ellesmere and Baffin Islands.
OK I confess.
Because I was so afraid of GW, I turned on the AC and opened the window.
The reason Ellesmere and the Baffin Islands are warmer is because that is where the Gulf Stream now dumps its heat:

The Gulf Stream no longer warms Eurpoe.
nor Europe either...
Could it be El Nino?
Money line. If it's hot, global warming. If it's cold, global warming.
No lose. Heads I win, tails you lose.
We are seeing new records set in that category, too.
So cold that I had to take my wife to Victoria's Secret, because she had shrunk from a 'C' cup to an 'A' cup.
So cold that when I went through a body scanner, they thought I was female...even James Carville was able to point & laugh!
Humiliating; no respect!
No respect at all--Met Office thinks we're all dunces.
As you know, respecting liberal science is impossible because it contradicts known science. Here is my equally plausible solution to their global warming:
Plant trees in the arctic and antarctic regions. That will absorbed the CO2 in those areas and prevent warming and the melting of the ice and it is "green". See how easy liberal science is?
I am still wondering about what happened to that pesky ozone hole.
