Lets see. Now who said The first order of business was the circumcision. The circumcision was to bind them as a people under HaShem, ONE NATION UNDER ONE GOD? That would mean by whoever said that, that it was circumcision, not maternity that determined nationality. Just to interject a point, the covenant said that EVERY male in the household, even servants, were to be circumcised. Circumcision did not make you Jewish. It was a sign that the household was under the covenant.

Exactly. But given that Abraham was also Ishmael’s father, he was Hebrew, Sarah gave birth to Isaac and changed the rules, so Ishmaels’ offspring would NOT be. See, GOD did that. It took many years to prepare Sarah for childbirth. It was GODs time and Abraham screwed up...no pun intended.
