ATLANTA The South has become the first region in the country where more than half of public school students are poor and more than half are members of minorities, according to a new report.
The shift was fueled not by white flight from public schools, which spiked during desegregation but has not had much effect on school demographics since the early 1980s. Rather, an influx of Latinos and other ethnic groups, the return of blacks to the South and higher birth rates among black and Latino families have contributed to the change.
The new numbers, from the 2008-9 school year, are a milestone for the South, the only section of the United States where racial slavery, white supremacy and racial segregation of schools were enforced through law and social custom, said the report, to be released on Thursday by the Southern Education Foundation, a nonprofit group based here that supports education improvement in the region. But the numbers also herald the future of the country as a whole, as minority students are expected to exceed 50 percent of public school enrollment by 2020 and the share of students poor enough to qualify for free or reduced-price lunches is on the rise in every state.

The whole concept of “majority-minority” is just the hypocrisy I love to see.
Yes, well, welcome to the New Detroit.
I’m thinking more of the White-Asian flight into Homeschooling, private and religious schools affecting the balance.
Regionally this may be true but, for my entire life, public school students in New York City have been overwhelmingly the
minority/majority (hard to syntax that one). I suspect they are mostly poor too by present standards. Virtually all major Northeast cities are the same. This article just slices the bologna a different way.
Yes, give us the keys and Affirmative Action, Federal, State, Local and private charity grants, HUD housing, WIC, Welfare, free schools and colleges, union-fueled high wages and benefits plus all the political power and Democratic leadership and what do you get....
Detroit
Oakland
Los Angeles
Atlanta
Thanks, but no thanks.
Just more doublethink.
hm.... where are all the white kids...? oh yeah! they are in private schools or they are being home schooled. Most whites except in the upper class suburbs or in rural areas have abandoned the public school system.
Public schools have become the place to educate those living in public housing, another form of welfare.
Aaaahhh, but in NYC non-whites are the majority overall. Happened sometime in the 90’s.
So what.
“The shift was fueled not by white flight from public schools”
That statement is false. It wouldn’t take much research to correct. Go to a public school and then go to a private school and compare the racial breakdown. I’m not saying it’s good or bad or right or wrong, but it is fact. In rural areas, I have seen the public schools have 90 something percent black and the private schools have 90 something percent white.
By 2023, half of the children 18 and under will be minorities as defined by the USG.
Soooooo, that means that whites get minority set-asides? (/s)
Riiiiight.
I live in the south and I don’t know anybody who sends their kids to public school. In my own family (incl cousins and their kids) we have church schooled, home schooled and private...there is no way in hades I would send my child to a public school...no way in HELL!!!
But I have to assume that they perform at approximately the same level of achievement? Sorry, I fell down laughing so hard on that one. Their lack of achievement might have something to do with traditional families and values or lack thereof. Used to be that boats where called holes into which you threw money, but it’s been usurped by the public school system. We’ve spent $15T since 1965 making America’s poor the best in the world. BTW, heard today on Fox that the universal service tax on everyone’s phone and cellular bills is being used to provide cell phones to the welfare class. Is this country great or what?
And the performance of blacks and Latinos in schools around here is abysmal, and the Asians do better than the whites, girls better than boys.
Wow, didn’t that just hit about every stereotype? Yet it’s true, right there in the report on my kids’ school.
Stereotypes are usually reflections of reality.
Liberal bean counter racism. The color of a students skin isn’t the question. I would rather have a black student from a good Bible believing family than a white kid from a bunch of freakin’ drugged out Hippies. Some Latinos are good hard workers and excellent students—some are not. Lets get over this Majority vs Minority nonsense—all the polls mean little and get back to real teaching without Freddy has two Daddies.
