..Authorities in Imperial County said Tuesday they will not press charges against two activists who swam across the All-American Canal to protest the drowning deaths of hundreds of illegal immigrants in the waterway.
John Hunter, the brother of a prominent former congressman, and John Carlos Frey, a Los Angeles filmmaker, were facing charges of illegally entering the All-American Canal in an act of civil disobedience.
Last month, the two men swam across the canal, which carries water from the Colorado River to San Diego County, to string safety buoys that illegal immigrants could use to cross the water safely...
Authorities did the right thing by not pressing charges, Hunter said, adding that jail space should be reserved for "real criminals..."
Climb-outs, fences, ropes and buoy systems located near ladders also are needed, the activists said...
Hunter is the founder of the Water Station project, which installs and maintains about 150 water stations along the border in the Anza Borrego and Imperial Valley deserts each year from March through October.
Hunter is the brother of former Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, who was largely responsible for erecting a wall along the border through much of San Diego County and Tijuana. Hunter also is the uncle of Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-El Cajon, who now holds the seat formerly held by his father.
Joe Kasper, a spokesman for the younger Hunter, said Tuesday that "the congressman's uncle is a humanitarian and he's trying to save lives."
