Arenas suspended indefinitely (NBA)

NEW YORK -- The NBA has suspended the Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas indefinitely.

"Although it is clear that the actions of Mr. Arenas will ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse, his ongoing conduct has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game," commissioner David Stern said in a statement Wednesday. "Accordingly, I am suspending Mr. Arenas indefinitely, without pay, effective immediately pending the completion of the investigation by the NBA."

Every game Arenas ends up missing during the suspension will cost him $147,208.

The suspension comes after multiple media reports over the weekend said that a dispute over a gambling debt led to a conflict between Arenas and Javaris Crittenton.

Multiple sources told ESPN.com that an argument commenced during a card game on the team's overnight flight back to Washington from Phoenix on Dec. 19 and escalated into a heated exchange between Arenas and Crittenton. The Wizards had Dec. 20 off, but sources say hostilities between the two Wizards guards resumed Dec. 21 in the locker room on a practice day.

Sources say that Arenas, in response to what was said on the flight, placed the three guns on a chair near Crittenton's locker stall and invited him to pick one before practice on Dec. 21. Sources said that Crittenton subsequently let Arenas know that he had his own gun.

Dumbass was posing for pictures with teammates with his fingers in the shape of a gun. I get the feeling Stern wanted to wait for the investigation, but wouldn’t tolerate being openly mocked.

Geez, another role model gone bad? Will someone please tell which public university gave this guy a scholarship to play basketball? Folks, lets stop the insanity of sending street thugs to college instead of the minor leagues. Tell the NCAA (who worries about native american team monikers) to enforce academic standards in sports scholarships. I seriously doubt this guy could pass a freshman entrance exam in English much less math. NCAA - what a joke.

“As I have said before, I had kept the four unloaded handguns in my house in Virginia but then moved them over to my locker at the Verizon Center to keep them away from my young kids,” the statement read. “I brought them without any ammunition into the District of Columbia, mistakenly believing that the recent change in the D.C. gun laws allowed a person to store unloaded guns in the District. On Monday, December 21st, I took the unloaded guns out in a misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate.”

OK Just what are D.C.’s gun laws now??

The NBA has been reduced to a gang of common street thugs who make millions playing a game.

I guess Arenas missed that whole Burris thingy in NY. Imagine, a pro-sports player who doesn’t watch ESPN? The guy is a certifiable genius.

In a further update, Arenas claims to have grown tired of the NBA grind and will now devote all of his energies to his first love...NUCLEAR PHYSICS.

Burris shot himself in the leg in a club. NY has wacky gun laws too. Even in California you wouldn’t have gotten more than a misdemeanor for that.

The crime of being a dumbass employee who is now getting fired.

You don’t have to commit a crime to get fired.

"What crime did he commit?"

The crimes are immaterial. That's not why he's being suspended - and should be fired. He violated the leagues policy about weapons in the workplace, and breached his contract in the process. I can't think of any other company in America that would allow an employee to brandish a firearm while at work, and not have already fired the employee.

So having an unloaded gun at the workplace is a fire-able offense in the NBA, but beating the crap out of your wife or neighbor is just a minor infraction?

This doesn’t have anything to do with the Lakers. Lakers, Lakers, Lakers...that’s really all I hear about regarding the NBA.

Maybe if he smoked pot, he would be fit to play. :-}

Oh Wait, he probably already does.

Didn’t Iverson or somebody pack?

Seems like a necessity for some in sports these days.

Didn’t the USSC rule that the second amendment means the individual right to bear arms......in D.C.

My guess is that the guns in D.C. need to be registered there so Arenas is incorrect in quoting the ruling.
