Out with the old in with the new. I miss the old that had respect for a White House occasion and didn’t show up in sloppy jeans and hoodies. I’m also sick of camel toe pants, and boob belts.

Not to mention expensive, ugly flat shoes w/no nylons and curtain-ish dresses for formal occasions. *sigh*

While it is good to pay respect to tradition, my personal reaction to the fact that a wealthy WASP family knows how to dress in tuxes and evening gowns for a formal portrait and probably owns these clothes is BFD. We are supposed to be a country without royalty. The fact that some short-term visitors from Africa did not wear the "proper" clothes for a somewhat less formal photo is not a very big deal IMHO.

While I agree that Michelle Obama sometimes seems to have questionable fashion sense, I don't get so excited about that either. Who were the best-dressed first family? Probably the Kennedys, but that doesn't mean that JFK was the best president.

"But what a scene did we witness! The Majesty of the People had disappeared, and a rabble, a mob, of boys, negros [sic], women, children, scrambling fighting, romping. What a pity what a pity! No arrangements had been made no police officers placed on duty and the whole house had been inundated by the rabble mob. " - account of the inaugural festivities for Andrew Jackson
