China Wins A Big One

The Chinese Air Force is satisfied enough with its locally made WS10A jet engine, to put it into production. This can be seen from that fact that the WS10A is now powering some of their J-11B fighters. Originally, the J-11 used a Russian AL-31F engine, but China has been working for a decade to manufacture their own version of this, the WS10A. The WS10A is something of an acid test for China, as it is a powerful military engine, and a complex piece of work. Russia refused to license China to produce the AL-31F, so the Chinese stole as much of the technology as they could and designed the WS10A. This engine was tested, and officially approved for production, several years ago, but kept running into quality control and performance problems. The WS10A may still not be as reliable as the AL-31F, but it's good enough to equip fighters in regular service. That's a major victory for Chinese industry, as only half a dozen countries can produce high-end jet fighter engines, and now China is one of them.

The Chinese shouldn't worry. David Cote at Honeywell corporation has plans to offshore engine production to China, and that should allow them to build all sorts of fun stuff like afterburning supersonic fan jets, something that Garrett (now Honeywell) developed for Nationalist China in Taiwan over 25 years ago (the TFE-1042).

Why worry when the West has so many traitors?

The J-11 is itself a license-built version/ripoff of the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker.

Evidently it doesn't bother the Chinese that they are known as the world's biggest thieves.

Raptors? Do we still have those? I figured that once Gates and obama killed F-22 production they’d just give them away so the world wouldn’t hate us any more.

Well we will have to sell Raptor technology to bring down the deficit! It's all planned by Zero and friends - so don't fret - Change is Change and Hope is in the beholder's eye!

Only the most America-hating Liberal Free Trader Globalist can be happy with this development.

Free Traders will look with pride to this treasonous development....and will have some stupid suck-up explanation for this....I am sure

Who do you think the Communist Chinese are aiming all this military buildup at?

Oh, I bet there's some American content in that jet engine. Probably had some strategically placed immigrant spies in the US and some excellent reverse engineering on anything produced in China for US companies remotely related to the jet engine project.

“Probably had some strategically placed immigrant spies...” who dipped their ties ‘accidentally’ into the “secret sauce” and after many apologies fed to the men's room where they placed the ‘soiled’ tie in a special sealed bag - which then found its way to China where it was reversed engineered —— brought to you courtesy of the PLA's Super 863 Project.

It matters not a bit to them, they think they can rewrite history after their victory. They might be right.

Couple of corrections here. Globalization, free markets, free trade, etc. is typically promoted by Republicans and their supporters. And their supporters are people in the business world from large corporations to small mom and pop operations.

Also, the engines were a result of the Russians willing to help the Chinese in this area. Russia is not part of WTO and China is. And I'm willing to bet (though, I admit I haven't researched it) Russia stole technology from the West during the Cold War to develop the engines they have today.

A modern fighter jet engine requires a huge industrial base to produce.

2(U.K and Japan) of the 6 countries currently capable of building those engines still source their core components from the U.S. Those they really can’t build these machines on their own. In reality there are only 4 independent providers for modern jet engines on the entire planet:

1. USA
2. Russia
3. EU (Germany + France)
4. China
