For the first time in 10 years the number of immigrants to Israel has risen this year, according to Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky and Immigration and Absorption Minister Sofa Landver.
In 2009, 16,244 people immigrated - a 17 percent jump over last year's 13,859.
The number of immigrants from English-speaking countries has also increased by 17 percent this year, from 4,511 to 5,294, said Eli Cohen, the director-general of the agency's aliyah department.

I have a feeling when ever a Jewish person becomes conservative they move to Israel
Or wants to live somewhere in which the nation is actually seeking to protect Jews.
Israel is rife with socialism.
Probably leaving France in droves.
Didn’t Sarah Palin, in a recent Facebook comment, talk about the influx of new people to Israel, requiring the need for development?
And didn’t one of the usual lefties call her an idiot for that remark?
I guess she’s not such an idiot after all!
Sarah Palin: I disagree with the Obama administration on that. I believe that, um, the Jewish, uh, settlements should be allowed to be expanded upon, because that population of Israel is, is going to grow. More and more Jewish people will be flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead. And, um, I dont think that the Obama administration has any right to tell, um, Israel that, that, uh, the Jewish settlements cannot expand.
It is, but it is getting marketedly better.
I will note I did not attempt to make a living there, but moved after I made money.
Yep. That was it. She doesn’t say ‘uh’ or ‘um’ any more often than Obama. Was that ABC’s decision to write them out or yours? :-)
I grabbed it at random from here: http://themoderatevoice.com/53831/ignoring-krauthammer-or-aiding-second-coming-palin-predicts-jewish-flocking-to-israel/
Watching the video shows the um & uh to be essentially imperceptible. Uhbama is a completely different story.

I thought Israel was a socialist country. I guess you can be a conservative socialist.
Good. Then I won’t have to chastise you for making fun of Sarah. :-)
Bill Clinton was verbally ‘fluent,’ shall we say? But he was just a used car salesman who’d learned how to lie with a straight face. Listening to W was torture, but at least I think he was trying to be straight & do the right thing. The uh’s & um’s are annoying, but how many of us could do better under the media spotlight?

That being said, the recession here has boosted American aliyah. There are many American Jews, like myself, who would like to move to Israel, but can't quite take the hit in standard of living. With the recession, Israel doesn't look so bad economically, especially for families with large numbers of kids. A religious family with 4 kids could easily spend $50-60k on Jewish school tuition here. in Israel, Jewish school is free.
I will make fun of Palin for saying that. It was a stupid statement. Aliyah is up modestly, but “more and more Jewish people” aren’t going to be “flocking to Israel” over a matter of “days and weeks and months.” We’re talking about a small blip here, nothing like the surge in the 1990s, when Israel got 70,000-80,000 immigrants a year. As is stands now, the number of immigrants is probably about equal to the number of Israelis who leave, generally for the U.S.

Picking up and moving your entire household overseas is a BIG thing.
From what I understand, despite the French government's apparent pandering to its Islamic population and several well publicized street crimes by Muslims against Jews in France, there has only been a very modest number of French Jews emigrating to Israel in recent years.
So is the entire western world, I'm afraid, including the US under Obama and the Democrats.
