It wasn't always this way. In the 30's we had Gone With the Wind, a war movie which managed to have more strong female characters than male, The Wizard of Oz, with almost an even split. These were big blockbusters. In the 40 and 50's we had the golden age of chick flicks, musicals, and Doris Day movies. There was an unusual movie, "The Women", made with only female actors, even in bit parts, like a cab driver. I would love to see a movie using that technique again.
I’m not sure I’d like to see a contemporary remake of “The Women”. There was one made in the 50s called “The Opposite Sex” with June Allyson, and even then they screwed it all up. Today it would be awful. And I hope no one ever has the audacity to tamper with “Gone With The Wind”. None of today’s pretty boys could even approach Clark Gable.
I’ve wondered why the actors from Hollywood’s Golden Age always seemed like grown men even in their youth, while today’s actors seem like immature boys even into their 40s and beyond.
True. But don't forget that ALL races and nationalities must be represented in movies, television and adverts. You absolutely must have a woman, a black, an asian, a nerd, a homosexual(or three), and a muslim. White heterosexual males are always optional. It must be a bitch to cast these productions these days.
