EJIDO MODELO, Mexico On the two-hour bus rides from her village on Lake Chapala to a dialysis clinic in Guadalajara, Monica Chavarrias thoughts would inevitably turn to the husband and son she left behind in Georgia.
A decade after crossing illegally into the United States, Ms. Chavarria returned home in September after learning that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta was closing the clinic that had provided her with dialysis, at taxpayer expense, for more than a year.
Grady, a struggling charity hospital, had been absorbing multimillion-dollar losses for years because the dialysis clinic primarily served illegal immigrants who were not eligible for government insurance programs.
Hospital officials decided the losses were threatening Gradys broader mission of serving the regions indigent population. But before closing the clinic on Oct. 4, they offered to pay to relocate patients to their home countries or other states, and to provide dialysis for three transitional months.
Ms. Chavarria, 34, left quickly with her 8-year-old son, Jose Andres, an American citizen who had never been to Mexico. But she has not found a solution there. Her free treatments have run out, and she can now afford dialysis only by poaching the savings her family has set aside for a transplant.
Her husband, Roberto Barajas, 37, and their 14-year-old son, Eduardo, remained in Georgia so Mr. Barajas could keep working and wire money home for her care.
In separate interviews, one in the farming village of Ejido Modelo, the other in the Atlanta suburb of East Point, Ms. Chavarria and Mr. Barajas each wept while describing their separation after 15 years of marriage.
I think about them all the time, said Ms. Chavarria, whose raven hair falls past her waist. It was the hardest thing to leave without them.

Only in the NYT — home to the chardonnay bleeding hearts.
No sympathy from me. They are criminals, taking jobs Americans WILL do.
What a worthless leech. I hope she stays in Mexico. How many Americans have to suffer now because of this clinic she helped to close.
What? No free health care back home??
“A decade after crossing illegally into the United States, Ms. Chavarria returned home in September after learning that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta was closing the clinic that had provided her with dialysis, at taxpayer expense,”
...”illegally” and “taxpayer expense” shuts off any form of sympathy from me. How ANYONE can read this and have any sympathy continues to puzzle me.
Repeat after me, "There is no such thing as Free, someone is paying for it somewhere"
Monica should illegally enter western Europe to continue her ‘free’ treatments.
Assuming they had any profits, perhaps the NY Times could devote a large percentage to the health care needs of the “undocumented.”
I’m so annoyed reading that sob story that I feel like throwing a shoe against my monitor.
Seriously.
“How ANYONE can read this and have any sympathy continues to puzzle me.”
I have sympathy for her medical situation. Doesn’t mean I want to pay for it instead of caring for my own.
Grady was a good thing for the poor people in the metro area till these leaches showed up and drained the well.
“What a worthless leech.”
I agree 100%. Also jobless rate in America would be much lower if the illegals were not here.
The one that got me in the story was the 20 year old who was already on taxpayer funded dialysis. Twenty years old!!!!
So we’d be stuck paying for his dialysis for what, 30 years or so?
WTF?
Mexico is busy establishing itself as the Gay Marriage Nation of North America. It can’t be bothered with taking care of its citizens’ medical needs. Perhaps if Mexico insists that U.S. homosexuals who marry there must stay there, it may have another lucrative money source besides the drug trade.
No wonder Grady went broke. They were paying for airfares and three months of hospitalization elsewhere. I live close to Atlanta and had wondered what had happened to Grady.
My wife told me the real story. The Dialysis center was made for the Local Residence, but was quickly swamped with Illegal Aliens and the Locals went elsewhere. The Locals were more likely to pay, but not the others. The system went bust. More thanks to Liberal/Progressive thinking that things can operate for Free.
The other tragedy, is that this poor woman will probably loose her husband in the process. She should have insisted he accompany the family and support the family. He may be doing so now, but the drain upon him and the attraction of available illegal women (now set adrift in this economy) may prove to great a temptation.
I pray that the Husband will resist the temptation and quickly rejoin his wife as the situation here in the U.S. will not be as hospitable (liberal) as it once was because of shear economics.
Even Orin Hatch came out and said the Dems are trying to
get a majority dependent on the gov’t to control the country!
"Ohhh - those nasty, cheap, selfish, right wingers who won't give free health care to 3 1/2 billion needy people !!!!!"
Sympathy,no problem. The solution however is for our corrupt neighbor to the south to get on the ball and provide for their own people.
