why would someone pick up a can and look inside?

Perhaps because when they picked it up, they were startled that it seemed to weigh alot for an empty can of soda.

It's really disgusting, as anyone could have picked it -- someone wanting to dispose of litter, a child noticing an out of place pop can, or some homeless soul collecting aluminum to sell at the recyclers.

Lots of reasons to pick one up — picking up unsightly litter, collecting cans that can be redeemed for the deposit refund, or just picking up a recyclable can to put it in a recycling bin.

Once you’ve picked up what appeared to be an empty can, and it feels a lot heavier than an empty can but the weight isn’t sloshing around like liquid, you’d look inside to see what the heck is making the can weigh so much.
