New Years Eve turned out to be Movie Day for the First Family. Vacationing in Hawaii on a rainy day, President Obama, his wife and their two daughters headed to a local shopping mall movie theater to take in the Digital 3-D showing of Avatar.
The Secret Service cleared one of the 10 theaters at the Windward Malls multiplex in Kaneohe for the Obamas, who arrived for the special screening around 9:20 a.m., well before the days regular showings get underway so as not to inconvenience other moviegoers. The other nine theaters at the multiplex are open as usual.
The president headed out to the movie after separate phone calls with John O. Brennan, his counterterrorism adviser, and Janet Napolitano, his secretary of homeland security, to discuss preliminary findings of their reviews into the attempted Christmas Day bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253. Mr. Obama released a statement saying that he will meet with agency heads on Tuesday after returning to Washington to discuss our ongoing reviews as well as security enhancements and intelligence-sharing improvements in our homeland security and counterterrorism operations.
The children of U.S. President Barack Obama, Malia (R) and Sasha (C), leave a car to go to the movie "Avatar" at Windward Mall in Kaneohe, Hawaii, with their parents December 31, 2009.
