China Hits Back at US Duties, Says It's Been Made A Scapegoat

China on Thursday decried a U.S. decision to impose duties of 10 to 16 percent on Chinese-made steel pipe, the biggest U.S. trade case to date against China, and said it had been made a scapegoat of protectionist interests.
The Ministry of Commerce said it was "strongly dissatisfied with and resolutely opposed" to the vote of the U.S. International Trade Commission for countervailing duties, which Washington said were needed to balance out unfair state subsidies to Chinese makers of pipes for oil wells.

But if you support the United Steelworkers, you are a patriot. Um, wait a minute . . . are we trying to save the steel industry, or bury it?
Does anyone in this White House own a history book?
Now that is funny!
If you think about it from Obama's perspective, he's hitting the trifecta: he's sticking it to the Chinese for dissing him, he's throwing a bone to his supporters at the USW, and he's making it more expensive to drill for oil in the United States.
China is not practicing communism. It is a fascist state. Supporting them is akin to supporting global fascism.
One could ask the same question of a sizable number of Free Republic posters. Protectionism cuts across all political boundaries, it would seem.
workers of the world are uniting....go figure! 2010...year of the tiger in the free world, year of the strike everywhere else!
The steel nazi’s have been pulling this crap for decades now. I used to have to watch the steel market carefully, and discovered the tactics the US steel nazi’s use...it works like this, a load of beams arrives on a boat from poland. the steel nazi’s cry “dumping”..the load is then put in a warehouse while the claim of dumping is investigated...meanwhile, the US steel nazi’s raise their price on beams an average of 25% while this investigation takes place. At the conclusion of the investigation, the claim of dumping is found to be not valid. The beams are released for sale, and the US steel nazi’s drop their price on beams to compete with the polish beams. Then, a load of steel plate arrives on a boat from belgium........
I’m there. I can get parts made quicker (5 times) and for less (4-6 times) of the same quality and sometimes even better. Not only that, they really appreciate your business. I have been anti-union when I discovered how the union workers at the GE plant in Cincy were getting paid time and 1/2 without even being anywhere near the plant (1982).
Nah, we’re just supposed to roll over and lube up for the Chicoms. But hey, we’re sure teaching Cuba a lesson, eh?
I know the Chicoms are in charge of the White House, but when did the Asion laborers unionize? I’m so confused.
True story: I interviewed (it was more of a meet & greet, as he had no positions open) with a USX executive in the late 1990’s. We were just chatting in his office, and I asked him about USX’s large amount of unfunded pension liabilities. He just smiled and said, “we’re too big to fail.” I’m serious.
Isn’t an artificially low RMB the same as protectionism across the board. I have heard estimates of 40% undervalued. If that is the case then it is like a 40% tariff on all American exports worldwide that compete with China.
Protecting steel tube manufacturers may have involved some mutual back scratching between the Obamanoids and domestic steel pipe manufacturers. However, it is ignoring the big issue of across the board protectionism by the Chinese through the RMB. Any comment TLR?

Like abused women, they keep crying out “but it’ll be different this time!”
The State Department in 2009 sought the Chinese government's help in blocking a sale to Iran of 25 tons of specialty steel for Tehran's defense industry to be used in building nuclear-related centrifuges, according to a classified department cable. "Post is instructed to inform appropriate-level Chinese officials of this transaction, and request that they investigate the entity and individuals involved," according to the cable, which is labeled "secret." It noted that the Chinese were to be told that the company faces sanctions for the proposed sale under U.S. law.
