Is Aviation Security Mostly For Show?
CNN ^ | 12/29/09 | Bruce Schneier

Last week's attempted terror attack on an airplane heading from Amsterdam to Detroit has given rise to a bunch of familiar questions.

How did the explosives get past security screening? What steps could be taken to avert similar attacks? Why wasn't there an air marshal on the flight? And, predictably, government officials have rushed to institute new safety measures to close holes in the system exposed by the incident.

Reviewing what happened is important, but a lot of the discussion is off-base, a reflection of the fundamentally wrong conception most people have of terrorism and how to combat it....

"Security theater" refers to security measures that make people feel more secure without doing anything to actually improve their security. An example: the photo ID checks that have sprung up in office buildings. No one has ever explained why verifying that someone has a photo ID provides any actual security, but it looks like security to have a uniformed guard-for-hire looking at ID cards.

Airport-security examples include the National Guard troops stationed at U.S. airports in the months after 9/11 -- their guns had no bullets. The U.S. color-coded system of threat levels, the pervasive harassment of photographers, and the metal detectors that are increasingly common in hotels and office buildings since the Mumbai terrorist attacks, are additional examples....

When people are scared, they need something done that will make them feel safe, even if it doesn't truly make them safer. Politicians naturally want to do something in response to crisis, even if that something doesn't make any sense....

Is Aviation Security Mostly For Show?

I think so. But these full-body scans might reverse the tables.

Is Aviation Security Mostly For Show?

After reading the job requirement for TSA employment, I have to say yes.

All For Show?

Why no... Most of it is an excuse to increase the number of Federal employees ...

I can certainly find a way past TSA and so could most of the people here .. it isn’t that hard ,, didn’t they fail something like 80% of their internal audits the last time I saw an article on it?

This is one of my favorites ,, my business takes me into City Hall many times a month ... I have to empty my pockets and explain myself every time I enter ... Why?? Aren’t the vast majority of workplace shootings by Employees? The same employees that walk around the magnetometers and are not subjected to security screenings!

If by ‘show’ they mean that it convinces the American Public that they are safe now, then yes.

So-called security measures will always be porous, even full body scans. The enemy can simply infiltrate the airport employers with their own people, who can pass bombs, guns, etc along during aircraft maintenance.

As long as our security measures are simply to respond to the last threat, we’re bound to lose. With a president who doesn’t understand that we are at war, we’re sunk.

LOL! This fall one of my committees held its annual fall meeting in the same university facility in which we've met for years. Some of the folks who evidently work there or are otherwise associated with the place went up to the guard's desk and showed ID. I have not seen this in past years.

I just gave a friendly and polite smile to the guard (she just smiled back) and went down the hallway to our meeting rooms.

OTOH, I have a memorable face and she might have just remembered me from previous years' visits.

No S#!+. Even CNN finally gets it. Airport security is eyewash for the sheep who believe if they are getting hassled then it must be good.

Well, ....duh!

It’s for:
1. Entry level government jobs, to clear the welfare roles. 2. Tracking persons of interest. 3. Controlling the economy of the aviation (certificate holders) industry (GA to soon follow). 4. Additional security agency to control the masses.
