As a fresh poll measured the political cost of Sen. Ben Nelson's health reform vote, he prepared Tuesday to take his case directly to Nebraskans during Wednesday night's Holiday Bowl game.
Nelson will air a new TV ad in which he attempts to debunk opposition claims that the Senate legislation represents a government takeover, and he makes the case for health care reform.
"With all the distortions about health care reform, I want you to hear directly from me," the Democratic senator says in the ad.
Nelson, dressed in an open-necked shirt and sweater, speaks directly into the camera during the 30-second ad.
The message will be launched during the Nebraska-Arizona football game and continue to air statewide for an undisclosed number of days.

I just want to see the youtube footage of him appearing in public again.
The Checkers Speech but without the charm :-)
Oh, to be at the control board of the station. Let, him speak. Then play the drunken video as a response.
The best thing he could do to save his neck is get on the air and say...”jeez, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that, and will never do it again.”
But he won’t.
I think people may want to watch the game as a bit of a break from watching our nation implode. I’m not sure Nelson sticking his face on that tube will work out for him politically. He’s toast and he and everyone in Nebraska knows it!
Don’t worry Nebraska, you’re not paying for the ads.
He must be really nervous. He is essentially starting the campaign about two years early. What’s worse, he is reaching out to Husker fans.
Nixon made a comeback from the Checkers Speech to win the Presidency in 1968 and a landslide second term in 1972!
1972 NIXON: 60.3%
I would make this analysis...he’s not the one who came up with this idea. This sounds like some national expert from DC who conceived it and is getting some DC funding to make it happen (this is not cheap). Their guess is that Nebraskans will view the tape and feel truth in his “sales”.
Thirty years ago...this would have worked. But with the power of YouTube and the internet....a response or two (maybe 500)...will hit the air within hours of his tape. I would guess that half of the state is now hooked up to the internet and readily view stuff like this all the time. I’m giving him a “A” for effort but a “D” for end result.
He sold out like a cheap whore and is just back peddling. Too late for that I hope.
“I just want to see the youtube footage of him appearing in public again.”
I’ll settle for audio, though it would be nice to see the look on his fat, stupid, traitorous face!
the checkers speech was in 1952. I doubt it really had much impact in 68 or 72.
Why any people believe these guys (politicians) is beyond me....
No, he is still digging.
Earth to jeltz25 - the point is, don’t compare Nelson to Nixon unless you think Nelson will recover from this appearance and be President some day.
We don’t think Nelson will be President some day . . . do we?
I have not seen the ad, but it does not sound from this article like he is back-peddling. It sounds like he is doubling down and saying he did a good thing.
The Checkers speech kept Nixon on the ticket in 1952 and led to his nomination for president in 1960. Without its success , he would be a footnote in history.
I hope the good people of Nebraska see this as the sham that it is.
