A former Manoa resident sent President Barack Obama an old photo of the two of them taken while they were third-grade classmates at Noelani Elementary School, requesting an autograph more than six months ago. He recently received the autographed picture back, as well as a personally signed thank-you note.

Agreed. Especially if the other kid was born in late spring or early summer...would be nearly a year younger coupled with their ethnic differences, can easily account for the significant difference is size. I'll bet Barry is STILL quite a bit taller than Mr. Scott Inoue.
“Barry” has a different chin in this photo than in ANY of those in your link.
And Barak (today) somehow got that orignal chin back after this third grade photo was taken.
My opinion? Different kid in the “1969” phot.
Also: isn’t there a different ink and notation and “re-write” of the inscribed “Barry” lettering on the bottom of the thrid-grade photo?
“I may be wrong, but the majority of Indonesians don’t consider themselves Chinese.”
They all migrated from China, but they came in waves. Of course the earliest settlers think of themselves as different—but you and I don’t have to.
They are also a source of pirates in the region and the South China sea, and are a menace to Australia’s fishing industy.
Still, their Beef Rendang is out of this world.

"The Mystery of Barack Obama Continues"
The Star Bulletin article is from today. Perhaps they got the initial story from WJ? Would be interesting if the S.B. run's this pic/story today if the WJ story is much older.
Have you ever written on those types of photos? They don’t take pen well. It’s quite possible the mother switched pens after writing the first name since obviously it wasn’t taking too well. It’s an old photo. It looks like it was smeared a little or something got dripped on it.
The kid looks the same as he does in his other childhood photos. What’s most interesting about this is the date conflict. Obviously Obama was not in Indonesia when he says he was.
Yes, I have written on them.
And a ballpoint pen doesn’t smear and over-write like that - not does a fountain pen. I’d like to see the original to see the impression(s) under the ink.
I’ve scanned a fair number of old black and white photos to digital. The scanner can be set to scan the photo as a very large image. What I usually do to increase the crispness / quality of the old image is to reduce the size (say from 3000 plus pixels horizontally to 640 pixels) but will set a high resolution such as 300 dpi, minimum print quality, for the photo before I use another program to create a jpg for the web. In the process of creating a jpeg, you can retain a high resolution or reduce it at that point. Either way, it produces a very crisp or vastly improved image. The photo of Barry and the kid is fairly high res. It has 200 pixels per inch whereas the usual jpeg has 72.
(Sorry if this turns out to be repeat info by the time I finish reading the thread. If I don’t comment now, I’ll end up not doing so.)
Still doesn’t wash. There were probably more black kids in this guys classes later in life. Did he remember those to? I think the photo is a phony. Name 1 classmate in your 3rd grade class who only attended part of the year.
Looks like Barry had his hand in that position on the outer, rounded part of the kid’s shoulder and then the kid leaned into BO. Maybe he lost his balance after being pulled in closer by BO at the request of the photographer. Barry’s hand had not caught up to the kid’s new position when the photo was taken.
That ear is very distinctive - it is he imo.
IMO, it’s reasonable that an asian kid attending a vastly “asian” school would take notice of a much taller “black” kid. Especially if he became friends with him at some point. Could very well have been the only black friend, or classmate he had while at that school.
Let's assume the picture is not him for the moment and go to the article. I am back to wondering what the game plan is.
Thinking out loud:
The article is printed in the Hawaii paper while Obama is visiting.
The article contradicts Obama’s fictional narrative called his autobiography.
The man with the picture supposedly has a typewritten by obama but with a personal signature. The letter is dated November 9, 2009
Have you read Nelson DeMille’s “The Charm School”? I think Obama may be a graduate.
I am left-handed and I tried doing that gang sign with my right-hand that Barry is doing and it hurts. I can easily do it with my left....just saying.

We had a student teacher at that time, and it was her idea for everyone to pick someone to partner with and to have a picture taken," Inoue said.
He and "Barry" picked each other and posed for the photograph in their classroom at Noelani School in Honolulu.
Student artwork in the background shows it was taken around Christmastime. Inoue doesn't remember many of the circumstances, but he remembers them lining up for the photos that he believes were displayed on a classroom wall for the duration of the school year.
His classmate, Barry Obama, didn't last that long. His family moved to Indonesia sometime during the school year.
"I don't remember too much about him," Inoue said. "I just remember he was big. After he left, I always remembered this picture. I always would wonder whatever happened to him. I always assumed he moved to the States.
"When I was in high school, when I was a junior or senior, I remember I was listening to a high school basketball game on the radio and I heard the name Barry Obama, and I thought, 'That's what happened to him.' "
By then, Obama had returned from Indonesia and was playing basketball at Punahou, a private school in Honolulu.
Inoue lost track of "Barry," as he was known in his school days, until the future president became a U.S. senator from Illinois.
"I thought, 'I'll bet that's him.' By then he was Barack," Inoue said. "I researched his bio and found out he's from Hawaii and he's the same age, and I knew, yeah, that's him.
During the presidential election, a classmate had submitted the class kindergarten picture to Hawaii Business Magazine, which ran it. The adorable photo of 5-year-olds features Obama standing in the third row and Inoue seated in the front.
"I had totally forgotten we were in kindergarten together," Inoue said.
What he remembered was the picture of the two of them. He knew his mother had it in her house in Honolulu, because "she saves everything." Inoue had her send the photo to him, and he had copies of it made. He sent one to the magazine, which ran it earlier this year. Another copy is hanging in his office, prompting the obvious question from patients: "Who is that?"
...
Although he left Hawaii in 1985 when he moved to Hayward to attend chiropractic college, Inoue speaks fondly of his childhood in the Manoa Valley, near the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
It was a neighborhood where people didn't have to lock their doors, and children mostly walked to school. The majority of residents were Japanese.
"(Obama) was possibly the only African-American in my class," Inoue said. "At that age you don't have so much of that prejudice. Everyone played with each other. I can't say what he went through, experience-wise. I think I read somewhere that when he went to Punahou, he had a bit of a hard time with those issues."

These photos almost look like what a computer artist might do if assigned to come up with these using the present day Obama as a starting point. Weird.
Something else - someone said the sandals look like they are velcro which did not come out until the ‘70’s (don’t know) - well, I have a vest which is very similar to the one in the top photo and it was bought in the 1970’s.
One more thing - the ears. Present day Obama has out-sized ears, too big for the size of his face whether they stick out or not. This kid in the spotonce.com photos has ears that are way too big for his face. The supposed 8 year old Barry in the 1969 photo has ears that are sized more reasonably versus his face. I don’t know enough about the development of the ear at different ages to know whether this could be normal or not. Anyone know?
Good find!
If he were Russian, sure...
