I’d say the real reason is neither. The real reason is to pump up the public coffers with money from drinkers. The mad mothers got their way, but .08 is too strict, and checkpoints should be illegal.

This is enough to get me to buy a blackberry type phone so I can get twitter. I’m not a big drinker, but also not a fan of being stopped because I may have done something.

I’m getting old and cranky and alcohol doesn’t suit me very well much anymore but I would use Twitter just to be informed about any possible strong armed tactics, especially if I have some form of mechanically condition on my vehicle, and one can never be too careful, there may be a decade old arrest warrant for something minor that you were unaware of, and suddenly on your way home after a swing shift they run a check on you and voila!

Have you ever wondered why those ignition interlocks were never adopted. It's those devices you blow into before you can unlock the ignition. It keeps the offender off the road and local govt. loses potential big bucks, along with insurance companiies.

Most people killed by drunk drivers, were killed by repeat offenders. Quit giving them their license back during the second offense.

DWI, DUI is a big money making rackett.

I was stopped recently on one of these DUI checkpoints. Not for any due cause but because it was a roadblock. I was completely sober and in fact working, making a delivery. I had to endure questions from the police on where I was coming from and going, had to wait 15-20 minutes to be cleared (thus making my delivery late), and then was giving a $60 ticket for a foglight being out, although I had other sufficient lights on both sides of the vehicle. The cop said he was sorry he had to write a ticket but he had to "do something" and I could get it wiped out in court. Yeah, great choice there, 60 bucks or waste a half day clearing the fine.
