Minnesota Gov. ... an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would force Congress to pass, and the president to sign, a balanced budget.

And you think taxes are high now? Taxpayers are such a small minority in this country that any such amendment would immediately push Congress to simply raise taxes to cover any shortfall. It would do nothing to stop reckless government spending.

The proper way to reduce government spending is very simple, but sadly requres a Constitutional amendment as well. The amendment would have to do the following:

  1. Ban all tax withholding. Force everyone to make quarterly tax payments to the various taxing jurisdictions instead of having their employers do it for them.
  2. Restrict the privilege of voting only to people who are net taxpayers and who are not on any form of government assistance.
  3. Lastly, impose some sort of balanced budget requirement. A balanced budget without high taxes won't happen if the othe 2 provisions are not in place.

These 3 things would piss off so many people that they will cheerfully elect candidates who will keep government spending in check.

I could not agree more. I write my own tax checks quarterly, and I absolutely believe if all the little worker bees out there had to do the same, it would wake them up from their idiotic "i got a refund" delusions.
