Not quite a dud, rather a "fizzle". It DID go off, it just didn't go off "high order". If the Dutchman hadn't acted as quickly as he did, the fire might have been unstoppable, and at best we'd be looking at several dozen, or more, smoke inhalation victims. At worst we'd have a burning aircraft, with nearly blind pilots, coming in for an iffy landing over Detroit.
