Tipster helps end bet pool at WVW (Super Bowl pool in teachers' lounge)

KINGSTON – A $3,000 Super Bowl betting pool run out of the teachers’ lounge at the Wyoming Valley West Middle School was broken up Wednesday morning after a tipster reported it to the superintendent.

Money and the cardboard with a grid containing 100 blocks that cost $30 each were confiscated, said Charles Suppon, district superintendent.

“I don’t think it’s an appropriate thing to do,” he said of gambling on school property, especially with the ongoing public corruption probe in Luzerne County that ensnared a member of the school board.

Suppon said an anonymous caller alerted him and school board President Joseph Mazur of the pool.

A call to Mazur was not returned.

Suppon said he went to the middle school on Chester Street between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and “by accident” found the grid in the teachers’ lounge.

“To get to the principal’s office you have to walk past the teachers’ lounge,” he said.

Approximately seven or eight of the blocks were filled in and $45 was collected, he added. The money was placed in the safe at the middle school.

Who set up the pool was unknown, said Suppon.

He was able to confirm that all of the money paid in would be paid out with no one profiting from setting up and running the pool. It was “the first thing I checked,” he said.

Suppon said he would contact the district’s solicitor to determine what steps to take next, including discipline and contacting law enforcement.

“Right now all I have is a pool,” he explained.

Attorney Michael J. Hudacek Sr., said he had not heard from Suppon by early afternoon.

“You can’t hide it,” Hudacek said. Suppon was going to have to notify police and let them take care of it, Hudacek said.

A message was left with Kingston police Chief Keith Keiper who was not working Wednesday.

Contacting police? Ridiculous. If it wasn’t a for profit scheme, but is against policy, take the pool and issue a warning that the next time it happens more drastic action will be taken. End of story.

Glad they’re cracking down on this. I cannot begin to describe the number of lives I’ve seen utterly ruined by Superbowl pools. Really, I cannot.

Wonder who was the rat? Just look at who wouldn’t buy a square. And then cross reference against the teacher who hates America. (Obama bumperstickers,, clipped woman hair, scraggly man hair,, gays,, etc) It’ll be one of them.

Another on-going corruption case in the county?

What a shock!

Gambling operations are only acceptable if the government is running/pocketing the proceeds, don’t you know this?

That article is too funny!

I remember about 30 years ago at the company plant I worked for, one of the shop union stewards ran a weekly football pool that everybody knew about and I was even a participant in it.

Well, he made the mistake of coming in to the HR dept. where I worked and used the xerox machine to run off copies of the completed pool to hand out to all the participants.

Unfortunately for him, he left the master copy on the copying glass and the next person to use the machine was the Labor Relations manager. Ordinarily the LR Mgr., who was a cool guy, wouldn't have done a thing but this particular union steward was a pain the LR Mgr.'s butt. They were constantly at odds about union stuff.

Anyway, the steward got a 5 week suspension and forced to resign his stewardship forever.........Everybody in the plant got a chuckle out of that......

AAAAH yes a country of snitchers and tattle-tales. Maybe the snitch should work for the Obama team and become a snitch czar.

As if the teachers and staff having a Super Bowl pool has anything to do with kickbacks and skim by the school board. Pathetic.

In my supervisory position, there's a lot of stuff I don't know, cause if I knew, I'd have to do something about it. I use rules only when people don't act like real, live adults. However, when someone brings something to your attention, there's no longer any plausible deniability, and you have to follow the rules. Everything's against the rules, and you'd go crazy trying to actually enforce all of them.

BTW, my ignoring rules does not include theft or something actually damaging, just the nonsensical little stuff that doesn't make any difference.

Yeah, I'm trying to imagine all the sport geek teachers all involved in their betting pool while the kids struggle to write their own names.

Many of them DID pay for their job (seriously), so it’s likely that a good number in administration and rank and file have a history of doing some “inappropriate” things in their career.
