The latest release version opens them just fine here. All of the local schools are using OpenOffice, anyway. MS won't be very relevant for much longer, especially with the anti-American economy folding.

Ubuntu Linux is easy to download, install and use, although I only use it sometimes for browsing and reading (*BSD systems here).
