JOSH KRAUSHAAR over at Politico has the latest scoop... Freshman House Representative Parker Griffith will be announcing he's officially switching his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican this afternoon.
Griffith, who captured the seat in a close 2008 open seat contest, will become the first Republican to hold the historically Democratic, Huntsville-based district. A radiation oncologist who founded a cancer treatment center, Griffith plans to blast the Democratic health care bill as a prime reason for his decision to switch partiesand is expected to cite his medical background as his authority on the subject. While the timing of his announcement was unexpected, Griffiths party switch will not come as a surprise to those familiar with his voting record, which is one of the most conservative among Democrats.

Wise move for a Blue Dog seeking to survive the coming onslaught.
Good on him. I hope there are many more with the same mindset. Problem is that he’s on record as voting against this so the votes won’t change, but it will demoralize the RATs and that’s something.
that was my concern.....is he doing it simply as a ploy to keep his seat??? last thing we need is another liberal republican in the ranks. i think voters in his district should think long and hard before they give him their vote simply for switching teams.
If he’s been voting against Pelosi, I can’t see how he’s ‘Far Left.’ Building power is about building coalitions. Perhaps this healthcare bill will give us a few more Dem turncoats. It is great to see that fallout is already occuring. I would hope the fallout trickles in till election day 2010. I am willing to give this guy a chance. If he’s a RINO, we can dump him later.
What amazes me about Free Republic is that many of us are so short-sighted that we would rather have blatant Communists win seats than people who would vote with us 50-70 percent of the time. I don’t like RINO’s, either. We have to start somewhere, though. Give this guy a chance, he’s from Alabama, a solidly Conservative state.
Will he face a primary challenge?
His Liberal beliefs become meaningless if he has a Conservative voting record. Alabama is not turning Blue anytime soon, so if he represents his constituents, fine. I don’t mind Political Pragmatists as long as they vote with us.
Well if his voting record is good it’s better than having a Pelosi hack in the seat.
He probally will not be challanged in the primary. The republican field in north al. is pretty weak , that’s how he won the seat as a democrat to begin with.
I totally agree with you. /Some on here want to throw everyone out which will serve to keep the RATS in power. We need every vote we can get.
