Ford offers buyouts to all UAW workers Photo 3:27pm EST
DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said Monday it is offering its 41,000 U.S. factory workers buyouts and early retirement offers in a bid to reduce its payroll costs as it aims to return to profit by 2011.
The buyouts mark the second round of such offers for Ford workers represented by the United Auto Workers union. About 1,000 workers took offers to leave the automaker in July.
Ford workers have until late January to accept the offers, which include payouts of up to $70,000 cash for newer hires to $60,000 cash for veterans already eligible for retirement.
"Despite a strengthening in our business, we still have a surplus in employees," said Ford spokesman Mark Truby.

DING DING DING. WE HAVE A WINNER!
I don’t know about the Postal Service in Tennessee but here in Georgia we are having seminars promoting the large number of supervisory jobs to be posted in the next two weeks. If anything the Postal Service is fixing to get even more top-heavy. I imagine they will offer the clerks another buyout this year but nothing to stand up and cheer about. In this economy it would be crazy to take 4 months pay as a buyout if you didn’t already have something lined up or weren’t eligible to retire anyway.
My next car will be a Ford.
They are already down to 41,000 workers? That is astonishing! I was there when the UAW tried to organize FedEx (which broke 100,000 15 years ago). What a bunch of incompetents. They COULD have had us, but they were socialist ideologues who cared only about bad-mouthing the company and capitalism, which is NOT AT ALL what FedEx employees wanted.
I went to a couple UAW organizing meetings. Sour-puss Alinskyites made me want to barf. So we went back to letter-writing and petty harrassment of management until we got what we wanted.
Idaho is a right to work state also. They should consider locating to the Snake river valley (quad cities area).
Auto worker ‘types’ tend to like outdoor recreation, and not only is the fishing (steelhead, sturgeon, trout, three types of salmon), hunting (deer, elk, wolf, game birds), ATV riding, and the weather good, but also, ATK/CCI/SPEER - the largest US ammunition manufacturer - is right in the Lewiston/Clarkston valley
As are several boat manufacturers, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield regional office, a four year college (with two major state Universities forty minutes away), two hospitals, a Super Walmart, and a Costco.
What’s not to like?

They are voting now. Ford's market share is up 1% to 15.9, but that is a marginal increase for them of 6.7%.
They are ramping up production by 58% next quarter.
The big question is, do they turn a slight profit for 2009.
With all these zephyrs filling their sails, when does even more buyers look away from the Gov't Motors Twins, because people want to buy a winner and something that is hot, not a kludge.
Speaking with the husband of a women that is a Corp Turn around Guru. It takes 3 yrs to change a culture. Hmmm Mulally has been their 3 years. GM is on CEO number 3 in one year, and is looking for a new one. Their is no leadership or mantra anyone can get behind. Epic Fail IMHO, this ain't gonna work and America is picking up the tab, and Liberals who are paying for it at sometime point are going to be pissed.
M.Y....
The Union didn't want to play ball and their behavior had consequences.
It maybe $h!tty on Ford's part, but they did this right before X-Mas, Psych-Ops IMHO.....
Also they did it before the NAIAS in January, to send a message as well.
That is my plan and many others that I work with. There's enough money in the bank to last me to 62.5 yrs.
And free health care to boot!
just wait.
Since obama’s wh is dupplicating the failure of the eu, he and his commie cronies will make it difficult if not impossible to fire/replace workers.
Then as the “reward to society” employees will not be allowed to quit or go to better jobs. IOW end social mobility unless acorn community leaders give you permission to do so ala a chicago “special letter.”
Heh heh...
The only problem is, the Ford Foundation supports “La Raza” and other fascist / socialist groups. I have a hard time supporting any of the automakers right now...but, my next vehicle purchase will be a truck, so, who the hell do I buy from (when there is no way in hell I’m buying a Toyota, not impressed with the Nissans). Guess I could buy used.
I do not think the automaker funds it. I think old man Ford set it up and like all the other failed to give very very tight aparmeters on what can be done with the funds.
The UAW owns a big piece of both companies along with the federal government.
then there's medical insurance...
