Alien was a masterpiece. I also enjoyed Total Recall quite a bit, too.

Alien is probably the best sci fi/horror movie ever. The whole team of people (Ridley Scott, model builders, photog, etc) created an incredible movie.

Alien was written by Alan Dean Foster not by Dan.

Total Recall
Screamers
and the rather unloved Invaders From Mars

Sorry to hear this. Dark Star is a gas and Alien of course a masterpiece.

Prayers up for his family.

I don’t get the appeal of that movie (Alien). When it first came out, I was in college and we went to see it. It was so hokey when that alien burst out of someone’s stomach. We cracked up laughing! We laughed so hard, I think we must have left because we couldn’t take it seriously after that. Come on Alien fans. You have to admit that was really hokey.

**You have to admit that was really hokey.**

You obviously hve never worked around animals or people with parasites. Many grow in the body and do eat their way out.

Bummer. I really enjoyed his work and would often look for his name when a horror/SciFi movie came out.

I first saw him as an actor in "Dark Star" - years ago I came in on the middle of it and had a WTF? moment. He played "Pinback" and was a howler. The scene when he's trapped in the elevator and the "alien" (a giant beach ball with feet) starts tickling him as he's hanging on had me in tears. Later, Pinack (I think) shoots it with a tranquilizer dart gun and wonders why it goes "Pop!".

Look carefully at the equipment of the guys in the air lock - you'll spot the backside of a shiny-new muffin tin on the chest of one of them. He and Carpenter did the screenplay and I think it was their first film venture while college students and with a college student's budget.

Grab a beer some night and watch this gem - slow in parts but overall a great whacked-out parody. It's now om DVD. Get ye to Netflix.

Alien was a masterpiece.

I’ll never forget stumbling into a screening of “Alien” with a
college buddy.
I’d had a bit of adult beverage...and watching it was fascinating
AND disturbing.

As I’d had lung surgery (to fix a spontaneously-collapsing lung)...
I was a bit freaked out to see something burst out a chest.

Great film. Still shout “Get out of there, Dallas!!!” when watching
other horror/suspense films.
Only with friends that have seen “Alien”, of course.

Have you ever scene the deleted "Alien Nest" scene? Poor Captain Dallas had a far worse fate that Kane, IMHO.

There's a couple clips of it about the net, but the short version is, Ripley finds the Alien's nest en route to the shuttle and finds both Dallas and what's left of Brett. She also uncovers what happens to the Alien's victims. Keeping in mind this is pre-Cameron and the whole "Queen" concept of Aliens...victims aren't impregnated by an egg...they BECOME the eggs.

It's easily one of the most chilling movie scenes I've ever seen.
