COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Prime Minister Stephen Harper was left off the guest list for an emergency meeting of world leaders that included U.S. President Barack Obama in the final hours of the Copenhagen climate talks.
Obama arrived in the Danish capital Friday morning in the hopes his influence could sway the 193 countries here to get a deal done. Shortly after arriving, the American president headed into a special meeting with 19 other leaders.
Among the attendees were Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei, Brazilian President Luiz Lula da Silva and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
The list, provided by the White House, did not include Harper.
A spokesman for the prime minister said the Danes compiled the list for Obama's people based on a representative mix of regions and carbon emitters.
The Prime Minister's Office said Harper is at the Bella Centre conference hall, where the summit is being held, to attend the plenary sessions.
Canada is part of a negotiating bloc made up of Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Japan, Norway, Iceland, and the U.S.

We are a world in the grip of madness and there doesn’t seem to be any way out of it. I pray that we can survive until we are given the opportunity to start the process of reversal of these policies next November.
Maybe the White House will give Harper an Ipod...
Madness is right. The world has gone nuts.
We need to cull our herd.
hey, Barry has managed to piss-off all of our other friends and allies, so it’s the Canadians’ turn.
(delegates to this thing are actually extremely angry at Mr. Harper over his refusal to commit economic suicide by shutting down his country’s oil industry)
Harper and Canada should consider themselves LUCKY not to have attended.
maybe Harper will give the WH some ideas on creating jobs considering Canada created some 80K jobs last month...
I am so proud of our PM. Best PM since Laurier? Best since MacDonald?
Hopefully if he gets a majority he can sway back from centre-right to right, but yes, I am pushing 40 and he’s the best PM in my lifetime.
What influence? Obama's agenda has been to effectively destroy the U.S. as a world economic and military power. And it's been working really well, in case anyone hasn't noticed.
His problem now, of course, is that he has no influence himself as President of the U.S. I suppose he forgot to factor that little issue into account. I guess he expected his mighty force of personality would carry the day. Well, what would you expect from such an arrogant narcissist? This dude is soon going to be eating so much hubris pie, his belly will ache for the rest of his life.
Blame Canada !
Those evil people that squeeze oil from sand and ruins mother earth.
Gaia save us !!!
I always thought Diefenbaker was quite a guy. His only major blunder was canceling the Avro Arrow project.
Why? relative to Harper he was a socialist. The old time conservatives were nothing like the neo-conservatives like Harper.
