In the years since their bitter battle, both former President Bill Clinton and independent counsel Ken Starr have predicted they’d be vindicated in the history books.
Now the first definitive history of the Clinton scandal is about to arrive – and neither man can be completely happy about his portrayal in its pages.
“The Death of American Virtue,” due out in February, asserts that Clinton had yet another extramarital affair, with Susan McDougal of Whitewater fame. Also in the book, Monica Lewinsky tells author Ken Gormley that she believes the president lied under oath when he described their encounters.
At the same time, Gormley offers a harsh portrait of Starr as a man out of his depth and who lost all sense of proportion. His interviews offer new ammunition to critics who contend the Lewinsky investigation was marred at its outset by improper questioning of Lewinsky in January 1998 by Starr’s lieutenants, who continued to grill her even after she asked for a lawyer.
Two presidents later, the saga feels like a far-off chapter in the nation’s history but the book makes clear that the principals, including Clinton himself, remain keenly interested in squaring the historical record to their liking.
In three interviews with the author, Clinton makes clear – to no surprise of longtime observers of the 42nd president – how aggrieved his continues to feel over the whole episode, unspooling a stream of choice invective about his other accusers. In Clinton’s telling, the head of the House impeachment team, Henry Hyde, is a “bitter right-winger” and “hypocrite,” and the judge who cited Clinton for civil contempt was merely currying favor with the conservative wing of the GOP.

Oh come on. It’s very common for people in plane crashes to be found with a .45 caliber hole in the back of their head.
And it is very frequent for flight attendants to survive a crash with only and minor leg wound, and then die on the way to the hospital.

Henry Hyde was a weak tea RINO at best. Describing him as a right winger works only if you stand him next to Vladimir Lenin.

Starr was assigned to investigate Clinton's "private" affairs by Reno, which is to say, by the Clinton administration while the real crimes, the Chinese connections and so forth were bottled up inside the Justice Department, never to see the light of day.
The Starr show was candy for the press. It was a diversion.

Wow! I didn't know that. I hope she was VERY well compensated for entering into that agreement, but I can't see how the Office of Independent Counsel could legally compensate her for something like that, nor do I see how they could force it on her without compensation. I'd love to know more about this if you can point me to any informative source(s).

Lewinksy was granted use immunity for her cooperation with Starr. It was part of her immunity deal.
I could be mistaken - she may have been granted transactional immunity, not use immunity. It’s been so long, I can’t remember anymore.
Remind me what she needed immunity for. Is it illegal for a young White House intern to accept an invitation from the President of the United States to come into the Oval Office and give him a blow job? Offhand I can’t think of anything she’s known to have done that any prosecuting authority would even dream of pressing charges for.

The era of Constitutional Government is over.
No. And, that's not why Clinton was impeached. Clinton was impeached for lying under oath about the affair in a unrelated civil matter. It's my recollection that Lewinsky may have been in some criminal jeopardy for either lying to investors (which is a federal crime), or helping to mislead or obstruct investigators about the affair. Also, there was some speculation that her mother (name escapes) may have instructed and coached her to give misleading or inaccurate information in her grand jury testimony.
Whatever the reason(s) Lewisnky and her mother needed immunity, it was most certainly granted. After a bout of fire-the-attorney, Lewinsky finally settled on Plato Cocheris who negotiated both immunity agreements at the same time - Lewsinsky's cooperation with prosecutes (remember, up until that point, she was an uncooperative witness), was predicated entirely on her and her mother receiving immunity.
