Probably weak due to a hyphenated name.

Most people do not like that, whether it’s some type of ___American or a women who refuses to accept her husband’s last name.

She keeps Herseth in her name because:

Herseth Sandlin was raised on her family’s farm near Houghton (between Hecla and Columbia) in a family active in South Dakota politics:
Her paternal grandfather, Ralph Herseth, was Governor;
Her paternal grandmother, Lorna Herseth, was Secretary of State; and
Her father, Lars Herseth, served in the state legislature for two decades and ran for Governor in 1986.

Her husband, Max Sandlin, represented Texas in the United States House of Representatives for 8 years until he was defeated for re-election in 2004, though that was prior to their marriage.

and this is one my my top wish-lists for a R pick-off in 2010...My husband is from SoDak (and actually knows her - they are the same age and went to the same college), so I know a little more than a Texan normally would about Sodak politics.

Whoever runs against her needs to let people know that she voted to increase the debt ceiling yesterday...I can’t imagine that will go over well in Sodak.

Indeed!

The man she married is nearly 20 years older than she. I just looked online and it looks like they met in 2002 when she decided to run for Congress and had his help with her campaign. He lost he re-election bid due to re-drawing of the Texas districts, so he’s no longer in congress...

...yes, kind of limits the extent of those nasty rumors. Limits, but does not extinguish. There are probably some people who remember her from her college days and...

LOL - I’ll ask my hubby when he gets home tonight.

There is absolutely 100% that she really wants to be Senator from SD and only recently announced that she will not challenge Thune (she knows there is NO possibility of her beating him). did you see this?:

“Herseth Sandlin was mentioned in a May 18, 2008 New York Times article titled “She Just Might Be President Someday”. The article explores women who potentially may run for the presidency, and characterized Herseth Sandlin as having “an inspirational speaking style that some compare to President Obama’s.””

If the NYT is already grooming her as a star, she needs to be taken out of office ASAP by the people in South Dakota.
