Modesto Police have released the identity of the woman shot and killed by officers at Catherine Everett Elementary School in northwest Modesto.

The woman has been identified Elizabeth Catherine Kropp, a 43-year-old Modesto resident.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Kropp had a mental health history.

Modesto Police are investigating the possibility that this was a "suicide by cop" scenario but the investigation is on-going.

Modesto Police and Schools administrators met with teachers and parents on Wednesday to provide more information and answer questions.

The two involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated, which is standard procedure in officer involved shootings.

A tragic incident occurred at a Modesto elementary school when police were forced to shoot and kill a woman who they say was wielding a meat cleaver.

The woman was on the playground with the knife and the school was locked down and police were called.

When they arrived, the police say the woman was attacking herself with the large knife.

Officers say they were forced to open fire when she charged at them.

Story locally was she was hitting herself in the head and body with a meat cleaver.

One thing to take yourself out but in front of kids sucks.

Doesn’t seem like a less lethal and compassionate path was considered.

Without question. I can understand shooting her if the LEO is alone and without backup. But with multiple police, It's hard to imagine why she wasn't tased first.
