I’m all for banning the DH, but the players’ union would never allow it.
I grew up an American League kid (Yankee fan). So I'm used to the DH. You are right that the players union wouldn't go for it. And I don't mind that it's given some players a few extra years--George Brett, Paul Molitor, Eddie Murray, Wade Boggs (all hall of famers).
I also don't mind looking at DH as a diminished role player. The batting version of middle relief. It doesn't bug me that it helped a few guys get to 3000 hits, etc. They had fine careers. But you respec the guys like Tony Gwynn who played the field their whole careers.
